It's was his first mega/super Fight. But as others said Chico, Gatti, Judah were big fights. I can't imagine the JLC fights weren't big. Maybe he wasn't as much of a name but it's had to be a big fight for boxing fans
Yeah it was his first fight against a superstar. But it was also Mosley, Trinidad, Hopkins, and many other fighters first fight against a superstar and neither of them went on to be the PPV King like Floyd did. And DLH never in his life did 2million ppv's before Floyd.
Was the De La Hoya fight Mayweather's first true big fight?
If so it's a credit to De La Hoya's star power. And Mayweather's fame and fortune is partly due to the Golden Boy.
Easily his first big fight. No one outside of the boxing faithful, not even casual boxing fans who would tune in for the likes of Hatton or Khan or some of the other boxing names in the UK knew who Mayweather was. They probably heard mention of his name in terms of p4p but that didn't really mean much. Oscar changed all that.
phillip ndou was also a big fight. he was 32-1 with 31 ko's! when people say floyd was a ducker who avoided people just look at that fight against ndou
The Mayweather theorem states no matter how good they were walking into the ring they were bums walking out, no credit ever given.
