Jay Z business plan: Buy old and boring boxing. They don't fight or win=Profit

Jay Z has Rigo, Cotto and Ward in his stable. Ward and Rigo are usually like watching paint dry and Cotto is now washed up at the highest level.

    Absolutely awful sojourn into boxing.

I suppose he may be thinking that he only has to wait a couple of years before PBC goes bust and all those fighters become available.

What do you think about Roc Nation's decisions and their potential in boxing?

I think RN got the best, most notable guys they could get to make their mark on the sport out of the gate. I'd assume that was their plan as they were throwing out a lot of feelers when they were getting into the business (Wilder, Broner, etc.). They also picked up about a dozen or so decent to top up & coming guys including the highly skilled, but underdiscussed Dusty Hernandez-Harrison & former TMT member Luis Arias, but few ever bring that up.

Its sorta a shame that a music guy can come into boxing on a whim damn near & sign up 3 boxers of the caliber of Ward, Rigo & Cotto to me. I mean ffs Ward & Rigo are guys many cats consider top 3 P4P even now.

But basically however these specific situations turn out RN succeeded just by planting a flag in boxing by getting talent like they got out of the gate. They instantly became players in the promotion game. If they can move on that going forward or they go out like 50 cent we will just have to see, but to me I feel like they have longer & more serious intentions in the business than most think.

I agree with Panda about him taking on guys thatll bring him into the promoting game. The problem I see is, Jay Zs business plan was to appeal to the African American Urban East Coast crowd but PBC has that demographic on lock. Had Jay Z come in before PBC was ever thought of, with the names he has under his banner, he wouldve been successful.

I see where you're coming from but they could only sign who was available, and they had some bad luck in that they got into the sport at the same time Haymon was building his stable up and signing everyone else.

I read that Cotto's deal includes a very high minimum-guarantee per fight, so no idea how profitable it is but the Geale and Alvarez fights seemed to do well and his next one could as well depending who he fights. So signing Cotto not a bad idea despite him being near the end of his career.

If their aim is to spend/lose money to get established then Rigo and Ward make sense, but both seem to have inflated money demands so I'd be surprised if those deals ever make RN a profit.

I think Roc Nation out here doing bad business. They burned bridges with Gary Shaw. They burned bridges with PBC/Haymon. They burned bridges with Banner Promotions, Star Boxing, & Andrade. They burned bridges with the WBC. They burned bridges with Golden Boy. With Ward and Rigo as their featured fighters I don't see them being in the business to long. Dusty Harrison's fight got sc****d the week of the fight because his opponent had visa issues. Seems like that's something you would figure out when you announce the fight. Oscar/Golden Boy were doing all the promotion for the lead up to Cotto/Canelo and they weren't the lead promoter. The fight did 900k but I remember Oscar and Roc Nation predicting 1.5 million a couple of weeks before the fight. Jay Z did nothing to promote the fight in interviews or on his social media accounts. I don't understand why he didn't send out tweets and instagram posts at least once a week promoting the fight? It seems so simple. Heard HBO took notice and weren't to happy. Cotto has probably one or two fights left. Rigo doesn't sell and doesn't really have any decent opponents on the horizon. Ward is marketable but we have to sit through two more tune-ups before he fights Kovalev.
