Comments Thread For: Pascal Calls Into Question Kovalev's Suggested Star Power

It goes without saying that for whatever Jean Pascal may lack in the ring (and that list isn't very long), he certainly makes up for in courage. The former light heavyweight champion is in exclusive company as a boxer willing to face Sergey Kovalev a second time in the pro ranks.

The two will meet again on January 30 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, the same hosting venue for their first fight this past March.

Kov is a good fighter. One of top 2 LHW but he doesnt draw at all.

He really isn't a draw at all.

I'm a GGG fan but there's no reason Kovalev shouldn't be getting the push that GGG is, he's beaten better competition actually and in reality probably should be ranked higher P4P. I suppose the only difference is that GGG is widely considered the best MW while Kovalev still has to beat Adonis before everyone can be sure he is the best LHW, i think he is but that's opinion.

GGG has that broken english charm and smile that's at odds with him being a wrecking ball in the ring and that appeals to casuals i suppose. Kovalev comes across as a lot more cold and probably not willing to play the media game as much.

And he'll probably never be the star that his skill and exciting style should be. I think that while many mean, violent punchers have become stars, Kovalev will never be what, say, Golovkin is becoming.

I think that's it. He doesn't have that boyish charm of GGG. He's a year younger, believe it or not, but he looks like he's in his 40's, he's balding, and he doesn't seem as friendly.

Beating good opponents sometimes isn't enough. Kovalev has the what you want in a fighter, but he doesn't have what it takes to be a PPV star or a huge attraction unless he has a dance partner.

The fans decide this stuff, and they have taken to Golovkin much more than they have Kovalev. Something about Golovkin appeals more.

I think Kovalev is much more charismatic than Golovkin, but it isn't showing in his drawing power. Perhaps it's because Golovkin came first.

Um, Jake, why did you dance around the whole Monkey-gate incident? Not everyone knows the details preceding Pascal's comments, so it's helpful to explain what he, and you, are talking about.

I know what you mean but i think Golovkin appeals to the casual fan more because they usually root for the good guy.

Kovalev appears a much more serious person than Golovkin, even if he isn't. He looks more like the bad guy, if it makes sense. Probably because he doesn't really play the media game like Golovkin is being made to with his little catchphrases and stuff.

There's no reason he shouldn't be close to as popular as Golovkin. K2 have set a blue-print. Main Events are unable to follow it for some reason.

Of course Krusher doesn't show the same niceties as Golovkin outside the ring. Kovalev is as mean and ornery (obnoxious?) outside the ring as he is inside it.
