Accepting Ward's offer would have severely reduced Golovkin's chances at unifying the MW belts, which is what he's been talking about since 2011/2012. A fight with Ward right now is not worth giving it up.
"Maybe 2017" is consistent with their message for the past year. Ward gets his popularity up and becomes worth it, they make the fight.

It's true that a stellar amateur career sometimes doesn't translate to popularity or mega PPV success in the pro game (e.g. Rigo, Ward) but the assertion being made is that inherent to an athlete with 300+ amateur bouts is a very solid if not exceptional base in technical skills. And despite not having a deep resume, to Golovkin's credit, his professional style yields KOs, unlike others who stick and run and clinch to win on points (despite outclassing their opponents). I think many are sleeping on GGG's ring savvy because he's blown out B/C level fighters without having to showcase his pure boxing skills. I got a glimpse of that in the bout against Lemieux and predict more will come to the fore when he fights elite opponents.Comment
