Time To Give Alvarez His Just Due

One thing I like with Alvarez is that there's multiple ways he can win a fight.

Today was measured and at range, he showed good defense and picked some wonderful shots between exchanges. That's the kind of skillset that enables you win on the backfoot as well.

But he can also brawl, and you know if it's time to throw hands he's gonna be right there and always be dangerous. Some of his combination punching is savage.

Yes, I also like his versatility.

I'm a big fan of Canelo. I thought the fight was close and Canelo edged it by a couple rounds.

Canelo landed the best shots in all rounds but he was too inactive for large periods of time, Cotto won some rounds just by outworking him and jabbing.

Many times 'Nelo froze Cotto with well placed counters but wouldnt follow them up, he let Cotto off the hook too many times, it's clear to me he's still having stamina issues.

He wasn't able to put on a dominant performance vs Cotto largely due to stamina issues

I've never seen Canelo look better, it's like he wasn't as tight against Cotto, his all around speed also looked noticeably better. I've always given Canelo a very good chance to beat Golovkin, don't think that'll ever change.

I was underwhelmed by Canelo. He was OK, but I really thought he'd cut off the ring better and finish the job.

I know he won't fight GGG at 160. But I hope they'll at least meet at 158 or something.

Yup, Canelo put a beating on the man.

With the exception of two gifs, Cotto didnt land cleanly at all. Canelo's defense is underrated. He rolls with punches, partially blocks, and counters well too.

Can someone who thought the fight was close link the gifs where cotto did good? Im genuinely interested in how you thought the fight was close.

He's definitely a good fighter, but I'd be surprised if he beat Golovkin. I won't completely count him out, but he'll need to be much better than he was against Cotto.

I was impressed too but let's not get carried away here, he won a close fight that he was favored to win, Canelo showed something special but Cotto is not GGG especially at this stage of his career. I'd still have GGG as a clear favorite against Canelo if they fought at 160, at 155-156, i'd still have him as a slight favorite to beat Canelo.

GGG is an aggressive counter puncher with power and good sense of timing, he's not gonna come to Canelo like Cotto was trying to to get his offense off, the best chance Canelo has is to back up GGG which won't be easy since Canelo is more confortable counterpunching and he lacks size and reach against GGG.
The size, strength and power advantages can be the deciding factors in such a fight where the difference in skills is not so big.
