Happens more than people realise. Contracts are often signed the day of the fight.

I dealt with a lot of big concert/touring companies who often used to sign contracts for shows 1 or 2 days before, despite tickets being on sale and the events being promoted sometimes 6 months or more in advance. Usually for re-negotiations depending on how much revenue was coming in, as well as legal implications of cancellations and other factors, such as if the performer had become a lot more well known within that time, they could re-negotiate percentage of ticket sales etc..it very rarely worked in favour of the venues, if at all.

I would imagine if this story is true and the contracts have not been signed, Golden Boy might have gone back and said now that Cotto isn't the champ, they want a bigger percentage than the original agreement.

It doesn't matter one iota if it'll help him in the ring - the point being made is that Cotto earned his stripes. Cotto is a fight away from retirement - why would he:

1). Take short money to fight GGG, when Canelo pays substantially more and more importantly

2). Fight GGG, when the more proven and greater fighter Canelo is available.

Canelo is a legacy fight; GGG is just another name

Cotto doesn't have to prove anything at middleweight

His two fights at MW is greater than all of GGG's MW run

He fought the lineal and defending MW champ, as an underdog, while moving up in weight. Being one of only like 15 fighters in history to go from WW to MW and winning a championship and in his first defense, he completely crapped on Daniel Geale, who till this day is still GGG's best win on his resume.

So really, fighting GGG proves nothing
