Comments Thread For: Joel Diaz Jr. Hires Byrd After Parting With Abel Sanchez

Sources with knowledge of the details have advised BoxingScene.com that undefeated lightweight prospect Joel Diaz Jr. (20-0, 16KOs) has hired Chris Byrd as his new head trainer.

Byrd, a former heavyweight champion who beat such fighters as David Tua, Vitali Klitschko, Evander Holyfield and Fres Oquendo, has made the transition to training. Due to his lack of power in the heavyweight ranks, Byrd's victories were often the product of his boxing skill and superior speed.

I'm a big Chris Byrd fan, but this seems like an unusual change. Wonder what went down with Sanchez. Interested how this turns out as I think Diaz Jr is a virtual can't miss prospect who'll at worse be a player in a year or two.

I didn't even know Chris Byrd was a trainer.
Interesting choice. I think Byrd could be one boxer who crosses over very very well.

Why not? Byrd has a few decent wins in his career that as mentioned, were the product of strategy and execution. What's Abel's professional record again?

I didn't know he was a trainer of professional fighters either, but I agree with your point about Byrd having great potential as a trainer.

He was a good strategist and does a very job of analysing fights and fighters. I could listen to him speak all day. I hope he does well as a trainer and passes his knowledge on he is one boxer I always did feel would make a very good trainer or commentator. He knows the game inside out.

His wins look good on paper considrring circumstances and I ve seen him 4/5 times workibg a corner.. let's see what happens over the next year from what I seen just an average trainer nothing special about his goings on in the corner between rounds ....Time will tell...

Byrd's working out of Vegas these days (traitor couldn't take the MI winters anymore...), so Diaz probably would get better sparring and not have to share his trainer as much.
