Comments Thread For: Golovkin's Promoter Reacts To Cotto/WBC Situation

In what was a bit of stunning news, it was announced by the World Boxing Council that they were 'derecognizing' Miguel Cotto as their middleweight champion for in essence, not paying their sanctioning fees and what turned out to also be a step-aside fee to Gennady Golovkin.

On Saturday night, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez can still win this title should he defeat Cotto this weekend at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. It was decreed by the WBC that the winner of this bout had to face Golovkin, who by virtue of beating Marco Antonio Rubio last October earned the WBC-interim title and secured the mandatory spot.

Yep. It's super difficult for haters to realize, GGG just wants to own the MW division. Then maybe he'll move up, but not until achieving his goal.

It's the same goal he's always had, and he will achieve it. Even fighters who hold the MW title will drop the belt any way they can to avoid facing him in the ring.

Canelo will have to find his own way to drop the WBC belt next without looking like he's just ducking. But you watch, he'll do it. And his fans will claim a great victory!

Cotto has accomplished great things in boxing. His only goal now is to make as much money as possible. He feels like he has nothing else to prove in the sport and collecting belts is not his thing right now. I don't blame him for vacating. Hope cotto wins so GGG can be elevated to full champ because I doubt canelo will fight him.

He was ready to abandon his 'goal' if Chavez Jr beat Fonfora. Or if Froch calls him out at 168. He wants big money fights over anything else, just like everyone else. If he had to pick between a title fight or fighting in a risky fight like vs Ward, he'd pick the titles. If he had to pick between fighting a high reward fight like Chavez Jr, he'd forget about the so called goal you've been fed and just fight Chavez Jr even a non-title fight.

Agree 1000000%. If GGG is offered what cotto is making for this fight, which is probably more than GGG has made in his entire career , he'd vacate all his current and amateur titles combined lol

Sure, back in the day, GGG would have loved to take that fight at 168 against Chavez, for tons of money. Then he'd get right back to his real work of consolidating the MW title.

In the more contemporary world, Ward should have taken the GGG fight at the public offer 164, meeting him in the middle. But I guess he didn't want to. He probably didn't feel he could win that fight.

Or maybe he couldn't make the weight because in actuality he's a LHW? You can decide. Either way, he didn't take it.

It's all about risk reward and he's no different. You have options:

              1. Cotto/Canelo winner...low risk high reward
              2. Froch.... Move up...high reward
              3. Chavez Jr..low risk high reward
              4. Unify the titles...low risk....wait for the high reward (Canelo)
              5. Ward... High risk....uncertain reward

That's probably a realistic picture of what their preference in order is.

There's absolutely no proof of this being true. He's always said he wants to fight MW title holders. His message has remained the same. The only time it has changed was when nobody would take him.

He's on record saying that he has no interest in fighting Chavez Jr in a March 2015 interview.

His message has remained clear. MW division, with only exception being big names. Just because he expressed interest in fighting Chavez 2 years ago doesn't mean he has any interest now.
