  • Comments Thread For: Shannon Briggs: I'm Back on 12/11, Then Klitschko Shot

Former heavyweight champion Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs (59-6-2, 52KOs) will return to the ring on December 11th in Panama as part of a big card being put together.

Briggs has not seen a lot of ring time in 2015, when compared to his activity rate in 2014. He entered the ring six times last year and went the full twelve round distance in one of those bouts.

Briggs is very entertaining outside ring but no indication that he wouldn't just get blown away. Shannon, please beat ANYONE with a pulse first and the fans will be interested. I know I would. Lucas Brown, Berman Stiverne - I'd even settle for Derric Rossy! Right now just looks like he's searching for payday and can't win.

It seems like he's fighting more and more in Panama. Why?

So before you know it, Briggs could be the #2 contender (Interim champion automatically gets the #1 ranking). Depending on how the WBA makes up the rules as they go along, Briggs could end up as the mandatory for the super champion, regular champion or interim champion at some point in 2016.

                We shall see.

But considering the WBA is located in Panama, I'm sure Briggs fighting there is politically motivated.
Chagaev is regular champ and has 18 months to wait until Wlad has to defend WBA after Fury fight, interim champ Ortiz if he defeats Jennings will be ordered within a year for winner of Chagaev vs Browne. Briggs has zero chance of a mandated shot unless he can get Chagaev to face him and obviously defeat him, then he has the small matter of the real King Kong to content with.

Briggs has no chance, his only opportunity is to worm and snake his way into an optional defence, the likelihood of that is so far fetched, remote and removed from reality when the only fight Wlad genuinely craves is Wilder or more importantly the holder of the coveted WBC belt.

Tyson Fury is the WBA mandatory, despite not being ranked #1, despite not being the interim champion and despite not being the "regular" champion. If Fury can get a mandatory shot from being ranked #2, what makes you think there is a *0%* chance Briggs can get a mandatory shot from being ranked #2?

None of your "logic" makes any sense because we're talking about the WBA. There is no logic.

Fury is leap frogging Chagaev and Ortiz to get a mandatory shot and I believe there is a better than 0% chance Briggs can do the same thing next year.
Fury was the WBO no.1 and mandatory, because Chagaev had messed around for so long they decided they would name Fury mandatory too in essence buying themselves another 18 months so Chagaev whom had only face one mandate was not able to cheat his way into another Klitschko fight, one nobody has any desire to see. You have to give credit and kudos where due and the WBA deserve props here on this one.

Just because the WBA stink previous does not mean they can do no right, I've spelt it out for you, Briggs can not get a mandatory in the next 18 months through the WBA without first defeating the current regular and also interim champ.

There is however a chance Briggs could get an optional, if Wilder continues to elude, Boente openly suggested Briggs could have been a late stand in for Jennings when he was to face Klitschko.

Fury is leapfrogging nobody, he was WBO no.1, the WBA simply wanted their slice also and in turn bought another 18 months for their next mandatory for their super champion not having to rematch Chagaev. It's in their rules, super champ must defend within 18 months, Chagaev as regular has his obligations also.

How Chagaev is even up there after fighting once a year is beyond me, Fury was Wlads WBO mandatory as of November last year.

But you are right I wouldn't put it beyond the WBA to rank Briggs high enough to get a mandatory.
