I remember him being somewhat slick and highly skilled but I think people put Kovalev in the slugger/brawler class. He is not, he is a very skilled boxer with some balance issues who has devastating power.

The only reason I give Kovalev the edge is Ward is moving up to his weight class. If this was at SMW it would close the gap in my mind. It remains to be seen if Ward can take the shots that Kovalev is surely going to land, not with the frequency he does on everyone else but he will land. I dont think Kovalev will knock him out but right now today, I think Ward wins some of the early rounds but I think they will be close and Kovalev will close in the later 2/3 or 1/2 of the fight in brutal fashion. They both will be facing the best they have ever been in the ring with. Its like football though, we all talk about what is suppose to happen but sometimes, sometimes something happens that is truly special. Im a boxing fan first, I like Kovalev and enjoy watching his fights but I can appreciate a master tactician plying is craft. Win or lose neither guy loses standing with me.

Pretty sure he did the same to Muhammedi and put his knee on his stomach.

Ward will need a referee who loves MMA/Wrestling that and he will need Kovalev to be weak in the clinch which he showed to Pascal today he isn't, this essentially is the only way he could have beat GGG on size and cheating foul play... bbbut but but but Ward P4P 1 doe lmaoooooo
I simply can't understand why it is that so many rabid Wlad fans can be so hypocritical when it comes to Ward, and even Floyd too. Wlad is one of the worst culprits in the last 50 years when it comes to winning fights using clear fouls as a major part of his fight strategy. How you can be so blind to one guy's blatant fouls and ref favouritism while criticising another, who does it far less as well, is beyond my comprehension. What's with you guys are your hypocritical double standards? Is it a black/white thing with all of you or what? I just dont understand it.

Just go watch Ward/Froch, then watch Wlad/Povetkin and then come back and tell me that Ward still needs to use dirty tactics to win his fights.

If that doesn't show you the difference between using blatant fouls and good boxing, then nothing will.

Anyway, enough of that guy. Back to Kov. Hopefully Duva has enough pull to get him the big fights this year, because he's not getting any younger, though with Ward's never ending inactivity and divaish demands who knows what will happen. How much longer do we have to wait to start seeing some of the top guys in and around 160-175 just man up and fight each other?! There are some genuinely great fights to be made and years are going by with lots and lots and lots of talk, but no action behind those words whatsoever.

It's like all the promoters have taken the Pac/Floyd debacle as the norm and are stepping up their game to try and outdo their ridiculous record breaking 6 year negotiation fall outs.

We just wanna see good fights damn you boxing gods!!

Yeah he does seem to be one of those guys that needs anger to be at his sharpest and most destructive. It's like the more rage there is, the more he understands the best way to unleash it full force is with calculated clinical coldness.

He knows that the most brutal beatings come about when you combine the power of rage, but for it to be most effectively deployed you have to be smart in approach to the violence.

He also has great timing to make up for his lack of speed.
