What he means is he won his title in 98 and didn't lose until his retirement in 2015.You guys need to quit believing everything Floyd says. I'm a Floyd fan from his pre-Olympic headgear days @ the Wyoming, Michigan National Guard Armory, but he's no 18yr champion.
130lb Champ Oct. 3, 1998-Apr. 20, 2002 (3yrs, 6mos)
135lb Champ Apr. 20, 2002-May 22, 2004 (2yrs, 1mo)
140lb Champ June 25, 2004-Mar. 23, 2006 (9mos)
147lb Champ Apr. 8, 2006-June 20, 2006 (2mos)
147lb Champ Nov. 4, 2006-June 7, 2008 (1yr, 7mos)
154lb Champ May 6, 2007-July 4, 2007 (2mos) - this overlaps with 147 reign
Retired
147lb Champ Sept. 17, 2011-Nov. 4, 2015 (4yrs, 1mo)
other titles after this one, but the above title covered his career
Add it all up & Floyd was champ for about 12 & 1/2 years. Still extremely impressive, but a solid drop from 18yrs. **** it ain't even been 18yrs since he won his 1st title ffs.
98-2015 17 years (out of 18 years as a pro)
If you leave out 2008 the year he was officially retired then it's 16.Comment

When someone with common sense breaks it down the marketed career doesn't look so impressive. Who fought, when he fought them and who he didn't fight when he should have. Mix in the lies cheating and scandal...it doesn't look so good. Not only that the reputation and remembrance of being a boring lack luster'd fighter to watch who did nothing exciting.
He did make a shlt ton of money though.Comment

Thats great, buts its not the same as being a world champion for 18 years consecutively.
9 years is a big achievement still.Comment

This. There were other fighters who stayed at a championship level as long (not a bunch) though none were undefeated. You guys need to quit believing everything Floyd says. I'm a Floyd fan from his pre-Olympic headgear days @ the Wyoming, Michigan National Guard Armory, but he's no 18yr champion.

Completely agree. I think it'll be possible for someone to win a 'world title' in their late teens/early 20's and jump from belt to belt for twenty years, given just how prevalent they are these days. It'll be extremely difficult, even now, but possible.Comment
