Why in hell would GGG, a smaller natural middleweight want to leave the middleweights to fight at 168 and handicap himself by fighting men much bigger than himself????? Middleweight is a traditional glamour division with over 100 years of history. Middleweight is the most prestigious of all weight classes below heavyweight. The 168 pound weight class hasn't existed very long and has very little tradition or prestige. GGG is a great middleweight. He is going to stay there and rule the middleweights until he retires so get used to it. Nobody criticized Hagler or Monzon ruling the middleweights until they retired and never fighting above 160 pounds. GGG deserves the same respect. His haters want him to move up to a weight class he doesn't belong in hoping that will get him beat. They know no middleweight alive can beat him.
Actually your timeline is a little off. Ward made the challenge when GGG was in deep negotiations with Froch for a 168 fight. The Lemieux fight came together weeks after those negotiations fell apart. GGG gained notoriety acting like nobody wanted to fight him and was afraid of him. Canelo already laid down terms and GGG rejected this. Ward laid down terms and was rejected. Had GGG's camp not run off at the mouth about how he would clean out anyone from 154-168 then nobody would really care about him staying put at 160. Sure you would want him to challenge himself at 168 but the backlash would not be what it is now. He deserves the backlash. He clearly isn't avoided to the point of being desperate for a big fight if he is picking and choosing from a list of opponents. There is no shortage of willing opponents. GGG should outright say we didn't mean it when we said we would fight anyone from 154-168. We really meant to say we will fight fringe contenders or limited fighters the likes of Lemieux.

LOL at fearing Canelo. Canelo doesn't past 6 with the G monster.
Lemieux went 8 rounds and has chin issues. I almost find it to be an impossibility that GGG could stop a solid real opponent, much less inside of six rounds. But I do agree that Ward would completely outclass GGG and win a lopsided decision.

You'd have to be an idiot to say he fears Ward, Ward doesn't even box the guys a wrestler come back when you talk about a legitimate boxer.

GGG might be afraid of Ward, but I don't think he's afraid of anyone else, including Canelo, Lara and any fighter at 160 or 168.

Canelo-Cotto are the most accomplished guys around 160. Martinez was before Cotto took him out. GG kinda reminds me of Floyd. He sits back and lets all the elite guys take each other out. Only instead of pouncing when they're shot, he actually just fights cans the whole time.
