Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” — Mayweather is Fighter of The Year

by David P. Greisman - For the third and presumably final time, Floyd Mayweather Jr. should be the fighter of the year.

That couldn’t be said for certain on May 2, though there was the strongest of possibilities at the time that the winner of that day’s bout between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao would wind up with the honors by the time 2015 was over. It still took time to see how the year shook out, to see whether someone else put forward a strong campaign or scored a significant enough upset to pick up the award.

Even then, it would’ve taken a remarkable effort to surpass Mayweather topping Pacquiao or Pacquiao defeating Mayweather. After all, Pacquiao would’ve beaten the best boxer in the world. Instead, it was Mayweather who made it look easy against an opponent still considered to be among the best.

Now that November is here, we might as well call the race. Nothing else that’s been done is as meaningful and nothing else to come could mean as much. [Click Here To Read More]

Beating Manny Pacquiao in the biggest fight ever and unifying three of the welterweight titles should at least put Floyd in the running. I don't see who's had a bigger year in boxing than Floyd. GGG is beating no hopers, Cotto and Canelo are doing the same. Terrence Crawford had a bigger 2014 than he did 2015.

Floyd hasn't had the most exciting fights this year but he certainly had the biggest win this year. Biggest in terms of legacy, biggest in terms of revenue made, and biggest in terms of meaning.

Yikes, that's embarrassing to read. I have nothing against Mayweather but even if you pretend Pac wasn't injured, taking a gimme fight against Berto eliminates you for FOTY. None of the other big names did anything better but Postol did, Gonzales arguably did. There's this idea that a break out fighter can't be FOTY, we have to put them in a separate category for some close-minded reason.

Yea, thats kinda how it was with Mayweather.

Every top win should count no matter who the fighter.

Until these questions get answered then Mayweather's whole legacy is suspect
