Golovkin has never said that he would fight either Canelo or Cotto at 155 for the MW title.

As a matter of fact, he has said all along that he would not accept a catchweight for either of them, and that the title is what he is aiming for, not Cotto or Canelo.

Is there really any reason for a catch-weight,.....

besides a physical advantage/disadvantage,....and even more, the psychological "one up-manship" of "you'll fight me at this weight or no fight at all"??? Especially for a title fight with a few belts on the line? It sounds like an out dated and antiquated practice in this modern era of boxing. We always hear how boxers spew out this BS about wanting to fight the best competition and most lucrative bouts available. Then one side wants to insist on catch-weights and various clauses to get the "upper hand". You would think that two fighters would want to face each other in their perspective prime form. But very often, this is not case at all. Just for the sake of argument, let us say Canelo wins his next fight with Cotto. Now he wants to impose stipulations on how the mandatory fight with GGG will go. If Canelo feels he fights best at weighing in at 155, while GGG feels best at coming to the official weigh in a 160, which is the max for the middle weight division, what seems to be the hassle? Side A trying to have a pissing contest with side B. Regardless of what they weigh in at, while staying within the division weight class, how can anyone NOT see the weakness of one side demanding the other to adhere to specific rules in contract, knowing full well that they would be risking their chances of victory for the supposed advantage of their stipulating opponent?? This is the question that haunts me about the so called "elite" not wanting to face the emerging top tier fighters without BS clauses and catch-weights. IT JUST PLAIN LOOKS WEAK TO ME. NOT CHAMPIONSHIP FORM AT ALL.
OK, I know the haters will throw in the complaint about GGG asking Ward for a catch-weight of 164 , but hey, Ward was an elite smw boxer, and top P4P fighter,...why wouldn't he accept the terms MW team Golovkin laid out. This would have been a good payday for Ward. Perhaps a little uncertainty of Ward in himself, the hype, and his fighting prowess?? Seems Flaky for a so called champion in a higher weight class to refuse these terms. A no lose situation for Andre right????? Guess not, I would imagine he weighed his options and saw he wasn't really ready to step up,....or down in this case to the challenge of going toe to toe with Gennady Golovkin. And perhaps a bit of passive aggressive payback from Team Golovkin to Ward for the insulting 50/50 take offer. If you can read between the lines, you would see Ward wasn't very serious about getting into the ring with GGG. And now he needs 3 warm-up fights with smw bums to prepare for a possible fight with lhw champ Kovelev. Talk about handicapping opponents. And for the record, Ward never completely 'cleanned out' the smw division, as there are plenty of quality fighters still left and untested by him. Out of the 10 biggest bouts he has fought in against "quality" opponents, he only has one KO victory. That's my argument with the Pro Ward/GGG haters on that catch weight debate.
But no, when it comes to world title fights, catch-weights are definitely inappropriate, out-dated, and a dishonor to the sport as a whole.

He's all but admitted he knows the difference from saying you can beat anyone from 154-168, and taking a 175 pound rehydrated fighter at 155.

He acts like agree to fight Floyd at a 154 Jr.MW somehow means GGG has to grant Canelo a 155 CW, or he is ducking.

I finally ignored him because I realized he is trolling me.

He goes back and forth saying opposing things.

Canelo said today he is ready for anyone. If that's true, he'll fight GGG. If not, then he'll look like a little ***** vacating and then still fighting at MW.

Not arguing with you at all..... but it is way simpler than that.

Catchweights should be abolished because they are completely unnecessary.

EVERYONE can see that catchweights are being abused.

Catchweights have been around for a long time, but they have become much more predominant of late because they are generally accepted by the viewing public..... it started with Pacquiao.

I told everyone that manny-weight was a nasty precedent.

The fighters are abusing catchweights because they can get away with it.

The problem is caused by ignorant casual fans.

Casual fans accept catchweights when it suits their guy, but when the shoe is on the other foot they suddenly see-the-light and become overwhelmed with the holy spirit of boxing, suddenly the sanctity of the 17 divisions cannot be violated..... YOU SHAMEFUL FANBOY ****S !

Casual fans are too ignorant to realise that with 17 divisons today catchweights are completely unnecessary and cannot be justified at all.

The purpose of a catchweight was to enable a fight between two guys who would normally never meet because of weight disparity. They were called an "exhibition match" and often involved two older past-prime name fighters, and they never involved title fights.

Oh how times have changed.

But we have 17 divisions today, and if I were to ask everyone in this forum to give me an example - in the last 30-years-or-so, since the 17 divisions came into play - of a fight that could not have been made w/o a CW..... I will show you one of two fights.....

1) an example of a guy who COULD have dared to be great - as has happened MANY times before - but chose not to

2) a literal exhibition match, between two (likely) older fighters who are no longer relevant in the divisions they campaigned in, and have decided to make fools of themselves.

Back in the day, a small LW that went up to fight a large welter could be out-weighed by 15+ lbs. Those are the guys you are trying to compare fighters of today with.

Those fighters are getting a rough deal imho.

I have sneered at every cw over the last 20+ years..... except the one Cotto/Canelo are demanding from Golovkin.

GGG is a CW abuser himself, so..... live-by-the-sword, die-by-the-sword.

AND, he said that he could do it.

The point is, until catchweights are completely abolished Golovkin will have to accept one for Cotto because the purpose of a CW is to enable one guy to fight a smaller guy..... and Cotto weighs 153.
