When kovalev has stepped up he has been deadly and humiliated a legend, regardless of age. He also wiped out cleverly who just gave fonfara, who is rated top five at lhw, a war. He's got some good wins and has looked impressive, I think that's the best we're going to get nowadays.
No, don't take it as comparing Kovalev to Bute. I'm speaking to the dangers of ranking guys based on speculation of what they're capable of. It's hard not to do in this sport but we've seen time and time again that speculation meets reality in an ugly head-on collision. I think Kovalev is probably really damn good but I don't think he's had any important wins. Even with his losses, I'd rank Pac higher because he's had those spectacular wins. With his current management, I don't know if Kovalev will ever even get those opportunities.

Sergey is rated about right. Right now anyone with sense can see he's not as good as Gonzales and GGG.

He's also a little more vulnerable. Dropped by Boone, draw with Boone, was a bit gassed against Pascal, lost rounds to Pascal and was eating some nasty shots against Pascal in the 6th and 7th round.

      Gonzales has the better resume

and GGG resume is about even but he's looked a bit more unbeatable.

Let Kovalev get a meaningful win or two, then you can say he deserves a spot like that.
beating Pascal was pretty meaningful in the division .
Bute didn't come close to facing an opponent of that caliber during his " run " .

Because he hasn't done enough. The people who are in consideration for the number 1 spot just haven't done enough to put them ahead of the pack.

I can't give any credit to the idea that Pasqual is still relevant. He hasn't looked good in years.

looking great against Bute doesn't count ?
i know he got exposed by Froch and whatnot , but the way he schooled him shows you Pascal was still in the game coming into the fight with kov .

he looked like complete crap after the Kovalev fight tho .

I think his biggest problem is that he's ugly.

Also Wlad's latest wins over Povetkin, Jennings and Pulev, they were not pretty, but they were better fighters than Lemieux, Monroe, Geale, Rubio etc.

Hopkins, Pascal, Cleverly, at the time he beat them were top wins, also better than anyone GGG has beaten. I would say Murray is better than Cleverly as a win but that's about it.

The Bute fight was a sad affair, not as bad as the recent Mosley Mayorga fight, but not far from it. Two guys whose best days are behind them. If you thought it was good, I don't want to take that from you, but they both looked slow, uncoordinated, and far from relevant in the current landscape.
