Hopefully with GGG's massive flop promoters realize they cant just put anything out there and PPV goes away
This is why in the past i said i hope we don't have any more "PPV Stars". Because then you get fights like Pacquiao v Rios or Floyd v Berto which should be nowhere near a PPV but because they are so-called "PPV Stars" it automatically gets put on PPV.

Without this desire for making PPV stars, it would force better fights to be made if they want to generate money because they would have to make PPV worthy fights, not PPV stars who can fight bad opposition for good money.

the fights are too expensive otherwise. you can get regular HBO money fighting cans. why fight a top fighter for the same dollar amount?

networks have shot themselves in teh foot by overpaying their stars to fight in garbage fights. they really don't promote or sell fights any more. they sell stars, and they promote stars.

HBO paid andre ward two million dollars to fight fringe contender edwin rodriguez. you think he's going to take two million dollars to fight the best puncher north of 160 lbs when he got two million to fight edwin rodiguez?

rodriguez got around million dollars to fight ward, IIRC. should sergey kovalev, one of the sport's very best, take the same amount to fight andre ward that he took to mohameddi? how about kovalev making the same amount edwin rodriguez took to fight ward? is it realistic to expect a top fighter like kovalev to take "b side money?"

        of course it isn't.

the system is broken. there's really no middle class in boxing. PBC is trying to get more fights on TV, but they're in bad slots, and most of them suck. sometimes they catch lightning in a bottle, btu that's boxing.

if you want to see ward - kovalev, get used to the idea of paying $70 for it.

i was fine with golovkin - lemieux, as long as it is building toward golovkin - alvarez/cotto, or golovkin - ward. it had a solid undercard, and i enjoyed the fight.

if it's just a string of small time PPV for golovkin, i'll be displeased.
If HBO keeps pulling 100,000 PPV buys they will have no choice to either expand their budget or eliminate the over paid mismatches. Either way, we win.

if boxing stops being profitable HBO will start airing movies on saturday nights. there won't be any boxing.

What if the winner decides to fight Golovkin and they put that on PPV with Roman G on the undercard again?

Maybe! It depends on how impressive the winner of Cotto vs Canelo looks I guess

they're not going to lose money just to please you.

if boxing stops being profitable on HBO, they'll stop showing it. it's really that simple.

PPVs don't mean anything in the overall grand scheme of the sport. Fighters pretty much fight whoever they want to fight, with or without PPV. Quillin, for example, wants $5 - $10 million to fight Golovkin, which translates to "I'm scared doe. I ain't fighting that beast. Too dangerous. Nah."

                  It's not rocket science.

Or at the least they should make fights accessible through alternative avenues. I know plenty of people that don't buy cable anymore that would probably be willing to pay for access to watch fights on the interwebs.

Also I think Ward/Kovalev is a legitimate quality fight. They may not have PPV stardom but that isn't a factor in my decision to pay for a fight. That's a real pick'em fight between two excellent boxers and an interesting clash of styles. Plus it almost surely crowns a new #1 P4P.
