Kovalev has a exclusive contract with HBO. Stevenson has no contract with any network and is essentially a free agent. There is nothing obstructing him from fighting on HBO. There is however a legal reason Kovalev can not fight elsewhere. So if Haymon and their fighters brag about how they are free agents and can fight anywhere why can't he fight on HBO who has publicly said they have no problems with allowing the Haymon fighters like Stevenson to fight Kovalev on HBO. They offered a career payday to another Haymon fighter in Beterbiev a championship title shot. If it's about money why didn't Beterbiev take the fight? He had been calling out Kovalev for years. Instead turned down the title shot and career payday to go into a eliminator fight. Who takes a eliminator fight over a direct title shot for ALL THE TITLES? It's because they don't want him on HBO and rather win a eliminator then force a purse bid and go through the same kangro joke that Stevenson has been doing with Kovalev.
Again this aint about HBO they saying Stevenson is allowed to fight here they tried to make a deal to get Beterbiev to fight there. The fight is not happening because Haymon's beef and refusal to allow any of his fighters to fight on HBO. Stop saying this is about money or purse bids or any other nonsense. This is only about Haymon not wanting to work with HBO. Which sure that's his right and he can make his fighters fight wherever he wants and doesn't want but don't muddy the waters with these BS excuses that this is about getting the most money ect. Stevenson's camp has been forced to turn down multiple big money fights with Kovaelv and Hopkins to go and fight for less money. Beterbiev was forced to turn down a title shot and big money to fight for peanuts on an undercard. If Haymon is simply trying to get his fighter the biggest check those fights happen. It's about politics and Haymon not wanting to put his fighters on cards with promoters and networks he has beef with.Comment

Because the purse bid is make believe. You try to overbid and if you lose you still don't allow the fight like he did with Quillen. Keep up. The purse bid is a joke to try and distract people from what is really going on. No purse bid is going to force Haymon to let his fighters fight on a network or card he doesn't want. And his actions are clear he wants none of his fighters on HBO.Comment

I know Stevenson is reviled around here and Kovalev gets endless praise but it's quite suspect how team Kov seems to make zero effort in setting up a Stevenson fight. I see plenty of excuses from them and from the fans but none of them legit or honest. Kovalev's most meaningful win is against a geriatric Hopkins yet they can't make any effort to compromise and go after the fight the fans want to see? And fans are so eager to excuse that? Please people, don't be afraid to put your heroes on blast.Comment

to get past this network deadlock one of three things needs to happen: the sanctioning bodies start properly enforcing mandatory fights (at all levels) and dealing out real punishments when they fail to get made, the fighters union up and put their feet down when their networks/promoters/managers block fights, or there be a federal law established à la the ali act that prevents networks from playing promoter
With the clusterf#ck that is pro boxing idk that unioning up would do anything. It'd be a group without teeth cuz there are so many powerful en****** in boxing all over the globe. Don't hate the idea, but I think you need a NFL or NBA type group in boxing before a union could weld power. Like the UFC fighters could garner some respect in the UFC if they did that, but idk how all MMA fighters could do something like that in all of the MMA world or how boxers all over could do that in all of the boxing world.
Please Satan don't let the government get involved in boxing or any sports really. The government can't deal with their own bs & shouldn't even be allowed to talk about sports in any government building. I'd like to see any mention of sports in a federally funded building be a suspension & fine for all politicians now that I think about it.Comment

Duva/Kov left the bid because they wouldn't have won it because Duva lacks the same resources Haymon has. This makes the point about Haymon guys on HBO moot relative to this discussion.
Come on man, its ok to not like Haymon, but blaming him for Duva's pulling out is crazy.Comment

The deal was done years ago when Kovalev and Stevenson were both on HBO and set to fight each other. Then Stevenson signs Haymon as his "advisor" and immediately killed the fight. Moved Stevenson off HBO and turned down the Kovalev fight with the excuse at that time being he wanted to fight Bernard Hopkins for more money. Not only does that fight never happen with Haymon stalling and refusing to agree to the contract and after waiting too long Hopkins instead fights Kovalev. Stevenson's TV ratings dropped big time from moving from HBO to Showtime. His last 2 tv ratings on PBC have been dreadful and he hasn't gotten a significant fight since turning down Kovalev. Stevenson is not a young dude he's pushing 40 and wasting the most important years of his career.
No doubt not fighting Kovalev has hurt Stevenson's career more then Kovalev. Since the time Stevenson backed out the fight he has gone on to fight and beat top light heavyweights like Hopkins, Pascal and once Ward's deal is official he will have a guarantee that he get's that fight next year. Kovalev is more relevant and popular now then when he was originally supposed to fight Stevenson. So his arrow is pointing up. While Stevenson's is pointing down he is stuck facing weak competition on PBC that does nothing for his legacy and gets killed by fans. Stevenson was more relevant and popular when he was fighting on HBO.Comment

You edited that quick lol. HBO banned Golden Boy to. And then changed their mind and allowed their fighters back. Also Haymon got himself banned when he tried to extort HBO into buying BS fights. Refused to allow his fighters to sign contracts with HBO. Also HBO asked his fighters to face better competition and he said no and kept cranking up the asking prices for bum tune up fights. When HBO said no we are not paying these ridiculous prices for crap fights he leveraged his army of fighters threatening them saying If you don't pay overprice for crap fight with Fighter A I'm taking Fighter B and C to another network. No contracts and strong arming networks to over pay for bum fights with no insurance that the next real fight against a top fighter will air on their network. That's why HBO banned him and he ran to Showtime where they gave him a blank check. That's the history HBO doesn't want to be strong armed and cut ties with him. But they have on countless times said they will work with him on 1 off fight deals with their fighters against HBO signed fighters. And since then Haymon refuses to allow it. Again that's his right he can make his fighters fight wherever he wants but stop acting like this is about money or phony purse bids. Haymon just doesn't want his guys on HBO if he can stop it he does.Last edited by bigdunny1; 10-21-2015, 11:55 AM.Comment
