Comments Thread For: Stevenson's Promoter on Kovalev vs. Ward Showdown

As we head into 2016, there is the possibility that the focus for WBA/WBO/IBF light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (28-0-1, 25KOs) could be a showdown with Andre Ward (28-0, 15KOs), who plans to make 175 his new home.

If that becomes the case, WBC beltholder Adonis Stevenson - the recognized light heavyweight champion - would most likely be put on the backburner.

The Stevenson-Kovalev fight, which was such a priority in 2014 and 2015, might become an afterthought by next year.

Funny how Kovalev has ended up with the big defining fights, would never have expected that. If there wasn't the Haymon/GB/HBO divide Stevenson would've most probably got them all. Just a bit of luck.

And love that Kovalev wants to fight the best as well, seems like Stevenson is happy to fight lesser competition whilst he still gets a good pay packet. Only people missing out are the fans, that would've been a power punching super fight. Not sure if it'll ever happen now.

Ward won't fight Kovalev, he'll fight Stevenson instead and just hold on to that one title like Stevenson is doing and never fight Kovalev

The deal was done years ago when Kovalev and Stevenson were both on HBO and set to fight each other. Then Stevenson signs Haymon as his "advisor" and immediately killed the fight. Moved Stevenson off HBO and turned down the Kovalev fight with the excuse at that time being he wanted to fight Bernard Hopkins for more money. Not only does that fight never happen with Haymon stalling and refusing to agree to the contract and after waiting too long Hopkins instead fights Kovalev. Stevenson's TV ratings dropped big time from moving from HBO to Showtime. His last 2 tv ratings on PBC have been dreadful and he hasn't gotten a significant fight since turning down Kovalev. Stevenson is not a young dude he's pushing 40 and wasting the most important years of his career.

No doubt not fighting Kovalev has hurt Stevenson's career more then Kovalev. Since the time Stevenson backed out the fight he has gone on to fight and beat top light heavyweights like Hopkins, Pascal and once Ward's deal is official he will have a guarantee that he get's that fight next year. Kovalev is more relevant and popular now then when he was originally supposed to fight Stevenson. So his arrow is pointing up. While Stevenson's is pointing down he is stuck facing weak competition on PBC that does nothing for his legacy and gets killed by fans. Stevenson was more relevant and popular when he was fighting on HBO.

Stevenson was with HBO up to the point when they were settling his fight with Kovalev... Then Adonis immediately left for Haymon and Sho... Kovalev didn't move an inch... This is of common knowledge, kid...

straight from the horse's mouth: hbo won't let their man fight on pbc, and pbc won't let their man fight on hbo. even if the boxing landscape changes significantly in the future and that barrier is broken, stevenson probably won't be relevant any more by then

All the fights Kovalev is getting Stevenson would of been first in line to get if not for signing with Haymon. lol Haymon's beefs and refusal to work with top networks and other promoters is why Stevenson can't get those fights. Also he would of been favored to beat Kovalev 2 years ago. Kovalev has gotten better and seen his popularity rise while the opposite is true for Stevenson. Yeah he's getting decent paychecks for fighting weak competition but he's doing major damage to his legacy and the truly big mega fight money he can't get. Look at where both guys careers were at a few years ago before Stevenson signed with Haymon and now look at the direction and state of both their careers today it's really no debate Kovalev has gotten the better of it.
