Barcham and others were saying 200k would be good, I thought that was very low standard. But there you have it, it didn't even reach that low standard. Goes to show, as many fans that hype up GGG and some exposure with the Apple commerical and Donald Trump, no one was buying that mismatch. You can't sell showcase fights on PPV unless the guy is already an established PPV star. For your first HBO PPV headline, it should be against a good b-side that people believe can win, no one outside of GGG fans were saying "Lemiuex can win" and they did not even believe that. Basically two showcase fights with top 5 P4P fighters fighting. You got the false #1 P4P guy that nobody knows, then you got the guy who won't step up. Terrible move to make this PPV. If it was just televised on HBO it would have done great viewership.

But back on topic, this was just not a PPV fight. This should have been on network TV or ESPN so that GGG can expand from a boxing fanbase to a mainstream fanbase.

GGG vs Cotto or Canelo would do a hell of a lot more than 150k on PPV.

And a hell of a lot more than GGG vs Ward too.

I agree. Problem is, GGG liable to blow the Cotto/Nelo PPV trying to act like he's relevant.

150k is not that good overall, but it should have been expected. I mean who really expected this fight to be competitive? It's hard to sell puncher's chance type opponents when the A side hasn't already grown into a PPV star yet. Unless you can appeal to the public outside of the ring, have a country behind you or have some type of it factor that separates you from the rest, you need a big fight to establish yourself as a star nowadays. GGG has none of these yet. If we could use the "Mexican style" as a PPV pitch, we'd have at least 20 stars in boxing by now. Doesn't work like that. He is on the right path and I think he will get there especially if the Cotto-Canelo winner faces him, but not yet.

Wow, I was wrong. I thought it would do twice this. So much for the idea that Golovkin is a star and doesn't need Ward.
I seriously did think it would do more than twice these numbers though. This is what the ufc's Mighty Mouse Johnson does and he's considered a ppv flop.

Nail in the coffin for 1M buys is realistic???? lol. Although honestly I'd expect many boxing fans to somehow glass half empty Oprah giving them a free car with taxes paid.

I think Canelo vs GGG will do 1M buys, despite these current GGG numbers (remember Floyd's best PPV numbers previous to Oscar were 300k-ish). I think there is a very good chance Canelo vs Cotto does 1M buys.

I think Canelo is going to be "the PPV guy". And the next PPV guys will be the guys who can parlay wins or close fights vs Canelo into their own PPV career much like Oscar's PPV career went more than likely.

PPV guys tend to begot PPV guys. Tyson/Holyfield/Lewis, Oscar/Manny/Floyd. Who's gonna bounce from Canelo is anyones guess. I mean who was thinking Floyd was gonna be the biggest PPV guy in history or even a top PPV guy in 2004, 2005? Hell you could argue he would never have a PPV career in 2004. Then he has his first PPV in 2005. Then he breaks the PPV record in 2007. Breaks it again in 2012. Shatters it in 2015. Just cuz you don't know who its going to be don't mean he isn't there.

Floyd is retired. But if Floyd came back he does 1M+ buys in rematches vs Manny, Canelo & maybe Cotto (as long as he doesn't get destroyed by Canelo, which I think could happen). Zero doubt in my mind. I'd bet all my points on that in a second to anyone dumb enough to take that bet.

I'm with you on Crawford. I think he's one of the more overrated "next big things on the edge of super stardom" in boxing right now.

And being that GGG is still not a superstar, it's unlikely a fight with him will hit 1M too. I think Cotto vs. Canelo has the potential to reach 1M though. But if it doesn't hit, and that's very possible, I think it's safe to say the PPV era is done.

Of course if Mayweather fought Pacquiao in a rematch, it would likely do 1M. But that's a fantasy match. A Canelo rematch is also a fantasy matchup. Pacquiao vs. Canelo is also a fantasy. Same with a Floyd vs Cotto rematch -- fantasy. These fights aren't realistic.

I got like 3 family members who love GGG and are trying to get back into boxing. But they don't have HBO and don't like boxing enough to subscribe just for that. I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of more borderline boxing fans that want to see him fight as well.

Honestly thought it could hit 200k. 300k would have been huge for them but 200 would have been good. Less than 150k is pretty mediocre. Considering this guy in being viewed as the next super star in Boxing. Not the end of the world though.
