WBC President: "Miguel Cotto Told Me That He Is Facing Golovkin"

You should have kept reading my post. Not sure why you only bolded and responded to the first paragraph when the answer is in the second paragraph. Golovkin is getting the fights now that he's been trying to get (unification fights) so there isn't any incentive to leave 160 when he has a unification today and the wbc mandatory immediately after.
But let me ask you, do you even know when Ward wanted fight? This whole thing isn't even about fighting now, Ward's people are crying about Golovkin not signing a Ward fight for sometime next year. They were talking about 14-18 months from the point of when they wanted to sign some kind of deal lol. I don't know who in the sport does that. "Golovkin, sign to right Ward now....for a fight after you fight Lemieux and Cotto/Canelo and Ward fights a couple more tuneups".Comment

Barely. Remember there is a 6 pound range in the middleweight. Cotto struggles to make it and so does ggg. The difference is that Cotto packs it on and ggg melts it off to get to their respective outer limits of the mw division. My analysis, not theory, still stands.Comment

That's fine if two people agree on their own terms to a catchweight. If it's fair and both sides agree, that's cool. The issue here between a hypothetical Golovkin vs Cotto fight is that Golovkin is mandatory to Cotto's middleweight belt. If Golovkin doesn't want to agree to a catchweight, he has that right and if the fight is sent to a purse bid, it will be at the regular 160 pound max, i.e no catchweight. Both sides would likely try to avoid a purse bid though and perhaps something could be worked out. Who knows.Show me the rule that prohibits the catch weight.
155-160 is the weight range for middleweight. They can come In anywhere in that range and be a middleweight. 160 is only the upper limit. There is nothing magical about that number. It's just a arbitrary limit set for the purpose of making fights fair and safe for fighters.
Catch weights were invented so that fighters who are clearly in different classes, Cotto and ggg, can fight each other when demanded and be safe for both fighters. Going down to 154 may be dangerous for ggg and going all the way up to 160 May be dangerous for Cotto. The fans want the fight. Meeting in the middle at 157 seems fair for both fighters. The benefit to us fans is that we get a great fight with two superior fighters in the same ring fighting at a weight that's fair to both. Fans win. The fighters win. Let the best man that night win. It will be one to remember.
So wtf is the deal with all the hate with the catch weight. It's been Halle I got for decade and without them is fans would have been without many great fights.Comment

when you strap a middleweight title around your waist and decide to defend it, you're a middleweight.Barely. Remember there is a 6 pound range in the middleweight. He had the option of doing a Roy Jones at heavyweight "1 and done" type fight for the sake of history, or whatever. Now that he is defending the title, he's a middleweight. Period.Last edited by OnePunch; 10-17-2015, 04:05 PM.Comment
