I think Canelo would too, and I'm sure K2 is banking on him to win. If Cotto wins I can see them just moving on. Maybe fight for a vacant title if it's worth it but it would be lame because even if they unify the WBC belt, Cotto would still remain lineal champion. It would be really awkward to say they least! We could potentially have a scenario where Golovkin has all the belts but technically Cotto would still be "the man" at 160. I'm hoping that doesn't happen.

We have complete confidence in GGG. We just happen to believe that unifying all the MW titles is MUCH more important than fighting a semi-retired, part time HBO announcer at a full weight class above his own. Once GGG has achieved his goal of unification, and if there are no other fights in his own division and he feels he wishes to move up PERMANENTLY to 168, then there would be no problem with a Ward fight assuming that Ward has something valuable to bring to the table, like a unified title at SMW.It would be different if they and Team Golovkin just said, "We are waiting to see if Golovkin can fight the Cotto/Alvarez winner. Until then Ward is not an option." No one besides some obsessed haters would have a problem with that because it's smart.
But nope, Golovkin's fans and management are trying desperately to paint Ward both as an unfair monstrously sized light heavyweight who is unfair to expect Golovkin to fight and a nobody bum with a weak chin who does absolutely nothing for Golovkin's career. It's pure fear. You don't talk a fighter like Ward down and make this many excuses unless you're scared of what happens if he fought Golovkin.
I keep saying it, Golovkin's fans seem to have zero confidence in him. I can't remember who it was yesterday that said this is just the same fans who saw Pacquiao lose to Mayweather and Matthysse lose to Garcia and don't want to see another "exciting" fighter they get off over lose like that.
But if you want to talk about confidence... why do Ward fans have such little confidence in their god that they refuse to even consider having Ward drop to 160 for the challenge, or even meet half way at 164? This has been asked a number of times and to date, not one Ward fanatic has attempted to even try to give an answer to that question.
The lineal title is meaningless in the overall picture. It carries as much weight in fight negotiations as P4P rankings and is important to SOME hardcore fans only. If Cotto or Canelo vacates the WBC title, in the eyes of most fans they vacate everything. A coward is a coward and the lineal title then becomes meaningless.Comment

It IS that simple. Of course everyone knows that "lineal" is different from the WBC title. And yes, technically you can only lose "lineal" in the ring.
However, should the Cotto-Canelo winner decide to duck GGG and vacate, only their hardcore fanboys will still consider them to be lineal champ. Everyone else will know whats really what......Comment

I know lineal still matters at middleweight because it's gone unbroken for a long time, but honestly if Cotto ducks Golovkin and is still considered lineal then it's not worth taking seriously anymore.I think Canelo would too, and I'm sure K2 is banking on him to win. If Cotto wins I can see them just moving on. Maybe fight for a vacant title if it's worth it but it would be lame because even if they unify the WBC belt, Cotto would still remain lineal champion. In this case it wouldn't be but it's a really strange scenario that doesn't happen often, thankfully.Comment

But he said he would drop that low for Mayweather. Can he not make up his mind? In any case, if he wants to fight Golovkin, he will have to wait for Golovkin to take care of much more lucrative and pressing business first. If Ward wants to sit on his ass for another year and a half, that will be up to him.Comment

If you have good height and reach for the upper divisions, then going up is not a problem. It's not a disadvantage. That's what most have done. Pacquiao has done it even more than Floyd. When you are a skinny 5' 8' you start usually in 126/130, but when you are 5' 10' or 5' 11 it's different, you don't start that low. GGG naturally is too big for starting at 140 or 147. He always had this weight.Comment

also dont forget that GGG didnt turn pro until age 24, whereas Pac turned pro at 17. Quite a bit of growth and development in most people from 17-24.Comment
