This is the harsh reality of boxing in 2015 and it's so unfortunate for everybody involved, including fans. If anything, for fans its especially difficult because then you have to try and decipher what's real and what's not: "Well this fight isn't possible because of the network barrier, but cmon bro... you KNOW top fighter A__ would beat top fighter B___ if they were on the same network!!"
But I agree- after a Ward fight, Kovalev's best bet would be to move on to another promoter. Preferably somebody with no network restrictions who could fight on both HBO/PBC, but I'm not sure there's somebody like that out there at the moment.
I made a thread earlier this year about how I felt GGG should leave K2 (around the time of the Monroe fight, before Lemiuex, which is a good fight for me because it is a unification. in that thread I said the only way GGG should stay at 160 is for unification's, otherwise move up for the legacy fights, so it's okay) Because I felt K2 has reached their peak with GGG and couldn't do much else with him. But now that they made the Lemiuex fight with Golden Boy and Canelo would likely be next if he beats Cotto (finally), things have finally stopped stalling and the progression has continued. Anyway, K2 would be way better for Kovalev then Main Events, moving forward, IMO.
The thing that sucks for Kovalev is that aside from a fight with Ward, looking into the future.... who else would be left on the HBO side of things at 175, besides possibly Gonzalez? Now that GBP/HBO/K2 are all working together, K2 is good for GGG because of Lemieux/Canelo, but they don't have any LHW's. Unfortunately for Kovalev, all the rest of them are on the PBC side. Adonis, Beterbiev, Fonfara and even Alvarez are the only other good fights for him with who's out there at this current moment. He's gonna have to make the switch, IMO.
