During a recent interview, former writer and HBO Sports commentator Larry Merchant discussed the lack of pay-per-view fights that either live up to the hype or exceed expectations.

Over the last few years, and then some, there have been very few pay-per-view events that left fans happy and eager watch more.

In the opinion of Merchant, Mayweather's very successful marketing style of picking an opponent who has little chance of victory - building him up - and then dominating him over twelve rounds in a lackluster fight - influenced a lot of other promoters, and fighters, to use the same pay-per-view tactics.

I can't completely disagree. But Floyd does make his opponents look less than effective.

lol @ Merchant saying that Mayweather was picking guys he knew he would beat. He fought everybody worth fighting in his era. Who'd he miss besides Margacheato?

Words like this from a guy who has never been in the ring, and more then likely has never been in a fight, yet thinks every boxer should sacrifice they're well being for the pleasure of the fans. There's different styles of boxing and if you don't like the particular style don't watch, but that's just it, people continued to watch. But what really gets me is this false argument that Mayweather was boring that's why nobody likes him, why so many will never consider him great; yet when Mayweather was offensive, and knocking people out, no one watched. Mayweather had 34 wins with 24 knock outs, and 9 of the 11 fights he one by decision were completely dominated by him, with quick high accuracy offense, landing over 50% in most of those fights, yet only 300k on PPV. Where was all these critics then?

I don't know who takes Merchant seriously. Lampley looked like he was always holding his laugh, and Forman looked like he wanted to punch him, lol. The guy was drunk the majority of the time while he was commenting on HBO and he has the nerve to judge the way some one chose to go about their business.
