Comments Thread For: Tureano Johnson: Cotto's Decisions at 160 a Disgrace!

Tureano Johnson will be hoping to fight the winner of the clash between two of boxing’s hardest punchers in Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux. Another possibility could be a bout against the victor of Miguel Cotto’s megafight against Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, should Johnson win his own fight when he takes on Eamon O’Kane on October 17.

Johnson is not one to keep his forthright views hidden and expressed to BoxingScene.com his disappointment regarding Miguel Cotto.

I agree, but Cotto isn't the 1st fighter to defend/fight for the MW title at a catchweight.

      Who is this guy?

Anyways, he's right in a sense about Cotto. However, it's just a ****** trinket and many of us crap on these belts constantly. Why is it such a big deal now with Miguel? Cotto is not a true 160 pounder and we all recognize GGG as the real champ of the division. I don't know why Cotto being a side attraction in the division (or close enough) and holding a belt mean so much to some people. I get that the linage dates back to Hopkins' reign, but it's really an overblown issue.

Johnson said..."Its an embarrassment for a MW to fight at a lower weight than the mandatory limit".

MW is from 154.01 - 160. Since when it is mandatory to weigh in at the absolute limit? Its the MW division not the 160lb division.

He lost me at "mandatory limit". The fact is that anything above 154lb's is legally considered MW, up until 160lbs. And the only way we can get SOME of the best fighting the best is with catch weights. That being said I do agree with those who say Cotto should defend at what ever weight he wants but he should allow his opponents to come in at the MW max if they so wish to do so. And last Tureano who?

the 'mandatory limit' for middleweight is 160 lbs. it's not middleweight if the fighters don't have the option to weigh in at 160 lbs, it's a catchweight. you can weigh anything from 0 lbs to 160 lbs and it will be a middleweight fight as long as the upper limit is 160 lbs

To all you idiots pretending not to understand Tureano, he is obviously referring to Cotto's forcing opponents to fight below the 160 lb limit for the division.

What's even more embarrassing is that Cotto claims to have wanted this title to become the 1st Puerto Rican to win as many titles in different weight classes.

Well...I've got news for you Cotto. This **** doesn't count. As far as I'm concerned, you are still fighting at junior middleweight. It's just that now, you are coming in a little above the junior middleweight division.

I'm no fan of catchweights with the intent to drain your opponent, but you if you want to get technical, weigh in weights isnt a fighters actual weight. Its nothing but a dehydrated/half starved to death weight. If the majority of fighters were to fight at his weigh in weight he'd get knocked out with the first stiff jab that lands.

If a MW weighs in at 155 but come fight time he's around 170, then he's a damn SMW. Not a MW.

Boxing needs some serious restructuring when it comes to weight.

Cotto can weigh in at 154.01 if he likes - but when fighting for a belt he should let others weigh in at 160.
