Comments Thread For: Golovkin Promoter: Lemieux Had To Be PPV To Happen

NEW YORK – For those wondering why the Gennady Golovkin-David Lemieux fight is on pay-per-view, Golovkin’s promoter explained that it wouldn’t have happened at this time otherwise.

HBO Sports didn’t have enough money remaining in its boxing budget for the remainder of 2015 to air the middleweight title unification fight live on the premium cable network, thus HBO Pay-Per-View was the only alternative if making the Golovkin-Lemieux match this year was a priority.

This is what I assumed happened.

If Lemieux wanted a significant payday, and Golovkin we assume would want more than the $1.5 million he got against Monroe, it's cutting it really close to where HBO just isn't paying the full purse.

      So which one is it?

Had to have the PPV to convince Lemieux to fight.....

or HBO didn't have money in their budget to air the fight live?

They should sell about 30k, maybe even 50k on ppv

          .... both?

Meeting the amount of money Lemiuex would want along with the cost of the whole event... would put them over a regular fight budget cost?

Could be. Would like to hear Lemieux's team take on this.

Well they most likely won't give us a money total... best chance of seeing that is if the NYSAC releases purses week of the fight or so.

But money has always been a big priority for them taking the fight... they always said if the money was right

Makes sense to me. No reason to doubt it. Golden Boy was not going to set up Lemieux against GGG for peanuts.
