Lemieux has a point. Cotto's fellow Puerto Rican Trinidad would've fought Lemieux at the full middleweight limit and not ask for a catch weight (and Tito would've TKO'd him). Cotto is a b1tch for having middleweights drain themselves to fight him. If he can't defend the titles at the full weight limit than don't be a champ there!

At the age of 36 Hopkins weighed in at 157 lbs in a middleweight bout in which he completely annihilated Felix "Tito" Trinidad. Geale 32 weighed in at an agreed upon maximum of 157 lbs, in which he entered the ring almost at cruiser weight, do you know why he lost? Its called skill, he would have gotten knocked out at any weight. If he couldn't make the weight he should have never agreed to it.
Oh yeah and another cool FACT, De La Hoya fought Hopkins, wait for it..... De La Hoya and Hopkins fought at an agreed upon catch weight of 157 lbs, in which Hopkins defeated DLH with a single body shot. It's called skill. Don't agree to the weight if you cant make it.
"...Sugar Ray Leonard came up with a bizarre deal to fight for both the WBC super middle and light heavyweight belts in what HBO analyst Larry Merchant called "a gimmick fight." Leonard specified that light heavyweight titleholder Donny Lalonde (who had weighed 173.4 when he won the title) could not weigh more than 168-pounds, the limit for the newly created super middleweight division."
"...Roberto Duran sprinkled his record with catchweight bouts throughout his lengthy lightweight reign. One of them cost him his unbeaten record, when Esteban De Jesus won a 10-round decision in November 1972. The loss didn't hurt his career or reputation one iota. It created a lucrative rivalry between "Manos de Piedra" and his Puerto Rican rival, setting up two subsequent title fights, both won by Duran."
As was the case in Shawn Porter's victory over Adrien Broner, catchweight bouts have been historically won by the more skilled fighter and nothing else.

That's not true. A year before Canelo Floyd fought for his 2nd SWW belt vs blown up welter, said he wants his opponents at his best, and Cotto was undefeated cause Pac fought him at a CW. Oh, and for years flo mos here have been ****ting on Pac for the CWs, like 1000s of threads. Then things changed in 2013, stopped being a mortal sinComment

I often wonder about the AnimalisticMeth type fight fan mentality. It's like they're willfully too ignorant to keep up with where the fighter is NOW. Their loss missing out on great fights I always say. Too bad they have to muddy up the proceedings with ignorant comments though.Comment

Cotto has been in more wars, whats the point? You were probably the same guy who picked Sergio to win knowing his history before the fight.Comment

Manny Paquiao has been fighting at welterweight division using catch weights every time with the exception of Maywether fight and no one said nothing. He fought Cotto (145 catch weight), fought De la Hoya (145 catch weight), Fought Clottey (152 catch weight), Fought Margarito (150 catch weight), Fought Aluieri (143 catch weight). In any division theres a limit, in this case (MW) is 160. But the division really starts at 154.5 to 160.
No. There isn't any minimum weight for a division. Lomo or Rigo can take on Cotto or GGG for the middleweight title. The weight class states that you cannot weigh more than 160 at time of weigh-in. (Which I think should be same day as the fight.)
The JR divisions are catch-weights in my opinion. And yes - many people criticized Manny for demanding catch-weights. Anybody that wasn't a Pac nut-hugger thought it was crazy.
There have always been catch-weights but I think we've jumped the shark with them the last few years.Comment

This is a thread about Cotto/Lemieux and of course Pac and Floyd come up lol. Floyd used a few catchweights and Pac used more than anyone...he is the catchweight King without a doubt. Cotto is now becoming like his stablemate Pac and using them 24/7.
Lemieux is right, Cotto is full of it. He made a mistake this time though because Canelo is more of a JMW so the catchweight won't do much.Comment
