The thing is tennis in the UK makes the majority of it's gate from Londoners and foreign tourists. The three noteworthy events (Wimbledon, Queens, ATP World Tour Finals) are all in London.
I'd assume nationwide, especially in the Midlands/North, would all prefer boxing over tennis if you asked them on any given day which they preferred. Don't forget the significant number of football fans who will co-support boxing at any given moment a local fighter rises to prominence.
We're only a few years from Joshua potentially becoming a Heavyweight champion as well, interest will increase tenfold if he can become the future talisman.

participation is obviously different because you have to be rich and the best of the best before you can even reach a decent level in motor racing but in terns of popularity id put it above boxing.
