Interesting idea for a thread. I can't argue with the Caribbean nations you listed cos I don't know too much about the other sports they are involved in.

In terms of Japan, baseball is huge, football is pretty big and isn't Sumo wrestling their national sport?

In the UK, an argument can be made for boxing being our 3rd biggest sport, football and cricket are the clear front runners and rugby is possibly 3rd but boxing, in recent years with Calzaghe, Hatton, Khan, Froch, Haye and tournaments such as prizefighter and the maxi muscle events have helped raise the profile further. Domestic events regularly garner 1000s of people in the crowds too.

Nah, caring about Andy Murray for 1.5 weeks a year doesn't even make it top 3.

Boxing is significantly bigger than tennis here.

Rugby garners 1000s of people every week in multiple locations.

England play in front of 82,000 around 8-9 times per year - and that's just England.

Boxing may be growing but it has a some ways to go.

Definitely not the third biggest sport.

Football, Rugby (Union/League) and Cricket at the very least are above boxing and Tennis probably is too. If you include Motorsport (I dont) then it would be even further down with F1 and Moto GP.

Boxing gets huge casual attention for specific events or specific fighters, but very few people follow the sport really.

Edit: Forgot about golf too. I dont watch it myself but my FB newsfeed gets spammed anytime there is a big golf tourney on.

2 weeks of Wimbledon madness + decent levels of attention for other Grandslams > tuning in to a couple of Froch fights a year.

Its debatable but boxing is definitely not significantly bigger than Tennis.

Honestly the other Grand Slam's don't get that much attention, unless Murray makes it to the last 4. Coverage is pretty weak too, French Open can't get exposure and settles for being on ITV4, US Open is Sky Sports exclusive, and the Australian Open is mostly on damn Eurosport.

Also the live gates of boxing completely overwhelms tennis (which has 2-3 events, all of which are in London exclusively). Homegrown fighters like Frampton, Warrington and Campbell easily sell out home arenas across the country year round.

Rugby is much bigger than boxing with countless weekly small stadium matches, it's not even a fair comparison.

Sometimes the weekly highlight of boxing is a town hall show with a couple hundred people :-(

Wimbledon gets like 40,000 people per day for two weeks straight every year. Prices are crazy too. TV viewing figures for those two weeks could well be comparable to a whole year of boxing.

In terms of participation tennis is much bigger than boxing.

Boxing is definitely not significantly bigger than Tennis.

Is UFC (MMA) getting bigger than Boxing here. I have no clue, but it seems to be more popular than Boxing amongst the people i know.
