Comments Thread For: Thurman To Press Mayweather Until Retirement is Official

WBA 'regular' welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22KOs) is going to continue his chase of Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26KOs) until the pound-for-pound king officially retires.

Thurman had hoped to face Mayweather on September 12th. Instead, Mayweather announced last week that he was going to defend his WBC/WBA super welterweight belts against Andre Berto in the main event of a Showtime Pay-Per-View from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

First off, I can't really blame him for the attitude of always wanting to fight the best, I mean isn't that what we have come to expect and desire from our fighters? That being said, talk is cheap and Keith Thurman should have found a way to move up in opposition after Guerrero.

The blame isn't totally on Thurman, because other top WWs were fighting similar competition around the same period of time (for instance Khan vs Algieri, Brook was trying to get Rios) and so booking fights between them was not a trivial thing to do as it takes more than one to tango and all parties were not pressing for fights between them. Plus we have a lot of BS politics between promoters, managers, networks to deal with too.

Whatever the reason it's disappointing that we didn't have more big matchups in that division to produce a clear frontrunner for Floyd. Bradley/Vargas was decent and Porter/Broner was a good matchup, but many of us were still left about equally enthused regarding Khan, Thurman, Brook, Bradley, Porter as matchups for Floyd.

Also, while not at all Floyd's responsibility, one thing that top fighters in that position in the future could do is use their position to press for good matchups.

But anyway, all this being said, Thurman wanting a fight with Floyd is reasonable (who doesn't) but he should also want to prove himself in fights with other top WWs. His efforts would be better spent focused on making fights with more realistic but still very credible opponents such as Khan, Porter or even Garcia.
