  • I have no issues with the Berto fight. The whole Mayweather thing is more a gimmick and circus these days than actual boxing so going out with this (admittedly dreadful) fight as his last fight is fine.

However, if this isn't his last fight, and he knows this, and he makes a comeback....serious questions need to be asked....by his own fans for once. Unless they don't care that he just basically scammed them.

      • Good thread.

You can pick any fighter in history and their resumes are laced was Andre Berto's. Especially the old timers.

The fact of the matter is the difference is its Floyd Mayweather. Simple and plain. If Pacquaio had beat Floyd and was fighting Berto for his last fight there would be no issue.

I keep seeing "well that wasn't PPV" So? What difference does that make to the level of opposition? No one is forcing you to buy it.

I also keep seeing "well that wasn't his last fight" Again, so? What's diffefence does it make of it's his last fight or not? I'd rather it be his last fight especially considering he just beat his main rival and the other fighter or this era.

          exactly.

buying a ppv fight is optional.

to be honest, I don't even like ppv.

          • After beating Frazier and Foreman, Ali took a soft touch, no really? Most fighters were probably never the same after those 2 greats beat there face in. Well I guess he should have rematched Foreman right? How dumb to say anyone took a soft touch after trading blows with 2 of the greatest heavys ever?
He could have just pulled a Floyd and waited for 6 months to fight.
You act like Ali had any control over his career, Don King set up everything, the fight was in Cleveland (not Kentucky for Ali).
Ali fought a lot though the 70's (the greatest era of heavyweight history), he fought all the fighters in the top 10-30 so yeah there will be some soft touches, but Ali can't change weight classes either. Floyd could fight anyone from 140-160 if he wanted.
Bottom line P4P #1 is fighting a 80 to 1 underdog and charging 75 bones, after charging 100 for one of the worst fights ever. I wouldn't watch that fight if you paid me to. Berto was just getting beat up by Lopez.

You are trying to talk common sense to Floydnuthuggers...this is a impossible feat

Ali was just a bum in the eyes of Floyds fans...a bum who fought bums...

"Ali was a bum who fought bums"

                Said by no one ever.

They really believe that, I'm actually shocked. Look at this gem here.

Yet Frazier, partially blind, battle worn, and slow still nearly kicked Ali's ass.

That's a different subject though, whether it's PPV material or not. I think most people will agree this is not PPV worthy. Like I said I sure as hell am not ordering it. My whole point is just the selection of opponent. Berto isn't a good opponent, but this isn't uncommon at all in boxing. And regardless Ali, if he could have got away with having the Wepner fight in PPV it would have been, Ali was extremely money motivated but in 1975 there wasn't PPV around and boxing was one of the most popular sports on primetime TV, finances worked differently then.

They are in here trying to downplay Ali's opponents, while simultaneously hyping up Floyds opponents

On one corner you had a guy who fought multiple ATG's and legends, had the odds stacked against him, fought in a brutal division where one punch can change the outcome of a fight, fought huge giants, fought 15 rounds, fought 3 - 5 times a year, fought for small sums of money and on top of all that, a man who faced prejudices outside of the ring

and in the other corner you have a small man, who fought washed up boxers, weight drained his opponents, waited for his biggest challenge to fall off the wagon, was paid extortionate amounts of money, arrogant man with no charm, a serial woman beater, one of the most boring boxers in history, fights twice a year , runs around the ring for 12 rounds and call its "defence".

but yes Ali was a bum...Floyd is TBE doe
