    It depends on the situation.

I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt, but when the fight is already decided and they are being hammered, there is a good time to step in. The one thing I hate is when refs stop it when a guy is hurt, but could still conceivably recover and have a chance. In Malignaggi's case, he hadn't even really been that seriously hurt or taken that much damage, but he was not in the fight and you could tell he was being worked towards a brutal KO loss. Even though I wouldn't mind seeing Malignaggi KO'd, I don't think the stoppage was wrong.

I think to an extent he did go out on his shield. He didn't quit. Maybe he deserved to take a little more punishment so he doesn't leave the ring with fight left in him, I'll give you that. That would have to be one of the most vexing feelings as a fighter, not being able to expend the fight that is in you, win or lose.

Depends. Paulie wasn't going to win and every hard punch threatened to prevent him from earning a living in the future.

In Paulie's case it was a good stoppage. His body was heavily punished, his face was getting battered. His offense was doing nothing whatsoever. Why let it go on? He doesn't have the punchers chance to turn things around.. I mean who would really let him continue getting punished some more(outside of Pac fanatics)

This is what refs have to consider

1-If the fight is not close does this guy have the power to turn the fight around

2-If the fight is not even close and the fighter has no power and is taking a beating...why let it continue?

The fight should have continued until Paulie quit or his corner ended the fight. The only time a referee should stop a fight is when a fighter is no longer in condition to fight back. As long as the fighter is willing, and he is able to put up a defense, the fight should not be stopped. The referee is not his mother.

For those who say it was stopped because Paulie obviously could not win the fight, well in that case the fight never should have begun in the first place because even a blind man could see he never had a chance in hell of winning that fight.

The round could have been allowed to reach it's end, there was only 38 seconds left, and at that point the referee could have consulted with the corner and stopped the fight at that point. Or the ref could have called the doctor to the ring to examine Paulie and then stop the fight on the advice of the doctor. But the ref should not have taken the decision himself.

It's amazing to see people defend this stoppage and I wonder if some of the same people were claiming that the Kovalev-Pascal fight was stopped prematurely.

Pascal could have changed the fight with one punch, Paulie could not.

The fans were robbed of seeing Paulie laying on the canvas unconscious, I agree. Would have been a great site to see.
