If you read between the lines about what Ward said. You can come to conclusion that he did in fact rejected the opportunity to fight Golovkin before. Now that Golovkin is very popular and feels that he should use his "A side" advantages against Ward. So in this situation they both, Ward and Golovkin, need to come to an agreement.

Time did not clearly favoured Ward. I am a bit disappointed with Golovkin demands for catchweight.

The more GGG fights, even bums that is, the more the gap widens on popularity with him and ward. Ward's popularity has already plateaued, and if he wants to bump up his popularity, he needs to fight someone like kovalev or someone with similar stature. So if Ward doesn't fight GGG now, sooner or later he'll be Class D or E rather than class b now. The popularity gap will only widen from here on giving enormous transactional leverage to triple GGG in the future.

He needs to do this now, beat triple GGG, because it's supposedly easier than kovalev, then be a perceived real a-side, fight kovalev. If he wins, then from here on out, he will command a good sum of money he deserves and fans will honor him. Right now, he's just a delusional fellow and he's not doing his self any favor, he's just wasting his prime/peak years with trying to fool people about being the a-side mumbo jumbo instead of earning it the real hard way, the way it's supposed to be. He needs to fight now, period, time is ticking away, his peak years are being wasted on discussions and transactions about this a-side/b-side bull**** that he didn't yet earned anyway.
