I remember one that was so-so years ago based on 3 Mexican brothers and their father who trained them.

Just an idea.

But I think it has more to do with the underdog story that appeals more to movie goers

kind of like remember the Titans, glory road was about black athletes in the underdog role
Undisputed & undisputed 2 were great boxing movies...

Went to watch it this afternoon, it had a handful of lump-in-the-throat moments to be fair. It was trying to be emotional and inspiring (and hit the mark a few times) but it ended up feeling contrived and fairly predictable actually. No spoilers but you've seen every one of these characters and story-lines before. Even the structure of the story just reminded me of other films, same old same old.

The 'southpaw' title does make sense once you have seen it but the action scenes are unrealistic (what do you expect for 5 months training??). There were some v. gratuitous shots of Jake's body - is this a vanity project or a movie, hmm? All the media build-up has been about the working-out, the sacrifice to get in shape, the 'boxer's physique'... Anyway, I think it is watchable but by-the-numbers - and that is par-for-the-course for most Hollywood output I suppose.

Side-note: I lol'd a couple of times during the fight sequences, ridiculous scenes. Nice cameo by Ortiz too!

The original Undisputed is highly underrated. Really fun film.
