Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” — Chris Arreola’s Last Undeserved Shot

by David P. Greisman - Chris Arreola doesn’t look like a heavyweight contender.

Normally when a sentence like that leads off a story, it is followed by an exploration of how an unlikely hero has been able to succeed despite his appearance, defying expectations and earning a chance to become a champion.

That isn’t what’s going to happen here. That’s because the reason Chris Arreola doesn’t look like a heavyweight contender is because he isn’t one.

The fact that Arreola has twice been able to fight for a world title doesn’t change this reality. Nor will it change even if Arreola goes on, as presumed, to challenge Deontay Wilder for his heavyweight belt later this year.

He’s nevertheless been able to get these shots, headline boxing broadcasts, make millions of dollars and remain viable nearly six years after his first failure for a variety of reasons.

There was his nationality. He was an American coming up in an era when Ukrainian great Wladimir Klitschko was beginning his dominant reign and when Wladimir’s older brother, Vitali, was getting ready to come out of retirement. The Klitschkos didn’t quite excite boxing fans in the United States, where the networks would soon spotlight them less and less.

There was his personality. He was a plainspoken, outgoing, out-of-shape, beer-drinking brawler. He made for a good interview. Arreola made HBO, which had long latched itself to a series of overhyped American heavyweights, want to spotlight him as the best next choice to stand in and crack away at Wladimir Klitschko’s perceived china chin. Dang, I had to read all that just to say he doesn't deserve a title shot. We all know that.

Guy who wrote this article is a biased fool and hater obviously.

Arreola is still the realistic favourite over Wilder and in my opinion will probably knock him out.

Aerrola is not very talented or skilled in boxing

Aerrola is getting big fights by default as there are no other American Heavies. 25 years ago Aerrola is another Joe Hipp or Scott Frank. Aerrola makes tex Cobb look like Ali. Aerrola disrespects boxing by being out of shape fat lazy and profane. Aerrola is better suited to being a security guard or selling fruit on a LA corner or cutting lawns in malibu. Aerrola is as much a boxer as Mike Tyson is as a candidate for the next Pope.

the writer almost makes it sound like wilder is the real champion and his belt is "the belt", like arreola is being allowed to fight the great one

in reality.. hes just a domestic paper titlist and its a pretty close fight

I have it on good authority that in any other era nipple boy would be an undisputed champion because heavyweights are bigger, and in better shape now...

            Isn't that right Elroy?

I always enjoy Chris Arreola's fights. He's a real ring warrior, he's never dull to watch.

But Wilder should man up and fight Povetkin FIRST, and Arreola should have at least one half-decent top 25 win before getting another title fight. Arreola-Szpilka is a good matchup.

Thirteen years and 40 fights into his career and Arreola still hasn't beaten a legit top ten fighter. Matter of fact he hasn't even looked half decent when losing to any when he has bothered to step up. And then of course after the lose he always steps way back down, where he actually belongs.

Arreola reminds me of Marco Antonio Rubio. They stick around forever kind of like a fungus and keep getting title shots
