Set the weight at 168, put out the offer that you would expect to command for 168, and see what Team Ward would counter.

The hangup would be, blatantly guessing, if Team Golovkin asked for a 70/30 split of the money for the fight at 168, or some other nonsense like that.

Because Loeffler could've easily said that they would fight Ward at 168, with a 60/40 Golovkin split of the money (Golovkin "being the bigger star" and all), and the intrawebs would've been cool with it.

That wouldn't be nonsense. 95% of the crowd will show up for Golovkin.

The 50/50 offer is just a thinly veiled dare.

Golovkin has HBO's backing, apparently crushes Andre Ward at the box office, is apparently the far more relevant star in the boxing world, and yet Team Golovkin's initial offer is 50/50. Let that sink in.

Floyd Mayweather Jr went up to 154 to fight Miguel Cotto, in his second fight at junior middleweight, and got what amounted to an 85/15 Mayweather split of the money.
