Willie Pep got booed back in his time. Read this:
Toledo Blade - Google News Archive Search
https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1350&dat=19500316&id=5tUiAAAAIBAJ&sjid=PAAEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2981,1061146&hl=en
It's funny in hindsight that great boxers of the past go through the same thing that fighters today go through. But as time passes they are looked at as brilliant boxers and they're tactics and technique are studied for the next several generations.
