WBC has no choice. Golovkin is the official mandatory defense and Cotto must fight him next or Golovkin must come to an acceptable agreement to step aside. No agreement, Cotto will be stripped if he attempts to defend the title against anyone else. WBC has no control over the situation. GGG and K2 will get a court injunction if required to stop the fight.

Golovkin is the mandatory defense and there can be no conditions such as a catchweight applied to a mandatory defense. The fight will be at 160 if it was to happen. If Cotto has a problem with that, he can vacate.

Of course, both he and Canelo have to sign the agreement first. Something they have yet to do.

They can do it and risk getting sued... or see if they have anything to save their ass like when Cotto beat Martinez and said Rubio would only fight next if Martinez won

By not fighting Golovkin in his next fight, as he is mandated to do as WBC champion, Cotto is effectively ducking GGG. His fans can no longer claim that Cotto has never ducked anyone.

It's not a risk of getting sued, it is a certainty. Loeffler has stated in no uncertain terms that if there is no signed agreement, they will force WBC to strip Cotto of the title. And the last time something similar happened, WBC went to court and lost and almost closed their doors as a result. I can go to the WBC web site and easily find at least a half dozen statements from Sulaiman and the WBC that Golovkin is the mandatory defense for Cotto and that he MUST ABSOLUTELY FIGHT HIM AFTER HIS VOLUNTARY DEFENSE. These posts go back to the day GGG won the interim title from Rubio, and are repeated quite often since that day.

WBC have less to stand on than Martinez does with his shot to crap knees. No agreement, they must strip Cotto or end up in court. If it goes that far, there may no longer be a WBC title belt in ANY weight class or ANY sanctioning fees for them to collect from ANY fight.

If Cotto fights and beats Canelo followed by GGG he has to go down as top 3 of this generation after May and Pac. He literally fought everyone.

If there is a GGG fight, it will be at 160. Cannot put conditions on a mandatory defense. Unless Cotto plans to get those rules changed as well? Cotto NEVER fights GGG.

Oh come on, you're saying if Cotto signs an agreement to fight Canelo and winner fights GGG you'd still say he is ducking?? That's reaching man, gotta give Cotto some respect for this.

The odds are not looking great for him to get both of those wins, but yes that would be an astounding feat.
