heres that article from fight news:
David Itskowitch on Cotto-Geale catchweights, the Canelo fight and Floyd Mayweather
RocNation Sports COO, David Itskowitch, spoke to ********* about Miguel Cotto’s victory at the Barclays Center, his next possible opponent (Canelo or Mayweather) and his opinion on the catchweight for the Cotto-Geale fight. When asked by ********* about how he felt the fight had gone, Itskowitch couldn’t have been happier, especially with Grammy nominated artist, Big Sean appealing to a new boxing fanbase.
The show from top to bottom was great. We had a great crowd and we had an energetic crowd and great fights with a great result in the main event. The crowd to me looked like we had a younger skewing than what you’d normally see at a boxing event which is one of our goals, to attract a younger audience and I thought the entertainment outside of the ring was excellent. I thought Big Sean went over very well, I thought it worked and I thought it people bought into it, overall the event was a great success.
Talking about Miguel Cotto’s part in the Puerto Rican Parade festivities, RocNation and Itskowitch were more than happy to see the pride of Puerto Rico light up the Barclays Center.
Miguel has always had an association with the Puerto Rican Day Parade week, it was great to have him involved in it again. His fans turned out in droves to see him and he didn’t let them down. They were loud and passionate. There was an energy at the Barclays Center that I haven’t really seen before at a fight there. You know, Miguel’s fights in New York, they do bring a special energy and I think we saw that.
When asked about the Cotto-Canelo fight, Itskowitch reminded ********* that it remains the biggest fight in boxing to be made.
It’s no secret that Cotto-Canelo is being discussed, it’s a fight that I think in my opinion is the biggest fight in boxing that can be made right now. It’s a fight that Miguel wants and it’s a fight that Canelo wants, it’s a fight that we want and it’s a fight that Golden Boy wants – I think it’s a fight that everyone wants. That being said, I think that you mentioned that Miguel being able to pick and choose and call his own shots, which he is in the fortunate position to do. And because this is the biggest fight in boxing and you know, it’s a fight that can compensate Miguel best for the top two fights, it’s a fight that we and he are looking forward to getting made.
With Floyd Mayweather looking for an opponent and recently praising Miguel Cotto, RocNation reminded us all of the complexities involved and the unlikely outcome that Cotto would fight Mayweather Jr.
I haven’t heard that and regardless whether or not he has been saying that, Floyd has a relationship with Showtime, Miguel has a relationship with HBO, obviously HBO and Showtime worked together recently however I don’t see it happening for a Mayweather-Cotto fight right now.
When questioned about the step-aside fee for Golovkin or if Cotto was willing to vacate the belt, we were told that Cotto has no plans to give up the title that made him the first four-weight Puerto Rican champion.
I think that Miguel wants to defend his title, he’s proud of his title and that title represents him in that it made him the first Puerto Rican to win world titles in four weight classes. We’re going to what we can to make sure that he gets to keep that title and if a Canelo fight is made, which is everybody’s goal, we would like that fight to be for the title.
In a highly politicized topic, ********* asked David for his thoughts on the catchweight for the fight and how fair it was on all parties. Itskowitch reminded us that everyone had agreed to it and that there were no surprises:
In terms of catchweight, I think that Daniel Geale agreed to the catchweight and you didn’t really hear Daniel complain about it too much and as Miguel said in the buildup to the fight, when he fought Manny Pacquiao he had to agree to a catchweight and you know what, if you don’t want the fight, you don’t agree to the catchweight, you don’t do it. Daniel Geale wanted this fight and agree to the catchweight so he did it and hats off to him as a professional. There was a lot of talk before the fight that he wasn’t going to make the fight and that he tried to make weight but Daniel was a professional and made the weight and that was it. I think there’s a little too much talk of catch weights going on here, if someone doesn’t want the fight then don’t agree to a fight at that weight.
If you’re a 168lb fighter and you want to fight for a 160lb opponent, you’re either going to have to make that weight or you don’t. If you don’t want to fight then you don’t agree to that weight.
It was very clear, it was in our contract of course. He knew going in that this was the weight. To wait to the week of the fight to complain about it, and Daniel didn’t really complain about it that I heard. But you know, if you don’t want to fight at a certain weight then don’t take the fight.
As a boxing fan and writer, I cannot wait to see Cotto take on Canelo in what will be an evenly-matched fight, free of unfair weight agreements and full of energy, passion and world class boxing that some might have felt wasn’t achieved in Mayweather-Pacquiaio.
