  • Comments Thread For: Hunter: I'd Like Andre Ward To Fight 4 Times a Year

BoxingScene.com caught up with world-class trainer Virgil Hunter a day after his fighter Andre Ward (28-0, 15KOs) stopped Paul Smith in 9 rounds in Oakland, Calif. Hunter said that he was glad that Ward, who was coming off of a 19 month layoff, was able to go deep into the fight.

"I wanted him to get some rounds in and box. Just get some rounds in and let everything come to him and not look for the stoppage. I just wanted him to be him and he did that," Hunter explained.

Sure why not? He needs it.
Won't go into if he can, but will just say why not if Roc can make it

      Me too.

I don't think he wants to fight 4 time a year, doe.

The last time Ward fought 4 times was 2009. I just don't see it happening at this point in his career. That isn't to say that he isn't capable, but I think he's too comfortable. He would wash the likes of Chudinov/Sturm/Medina/Neilsen.

At this point I'd be happy with 4 times in 4 years.

Well he has to if he wants to build momentum with the fans. Fightn once or twice a year only works for attractions.

              Ward should clean out 168:

              Groves
              Jack
              James DeGale
              Andre Dirrell
              Anthony Direll

Unfortunately I don't believe he wants to fight 4 times a year. Boxers now are more interested in big pay days than their legacy in the sport.

Ward will never fight 4 times in a one year span. Never. He is simply not willing to - too comfortable.

It would be amazing if he could but he already cleared out his division once. I doubt he is motivated enough to do it again and I doubt those fighters will step up to fight Ward unless there is crazy money involved.
