Comments Thread For: Arum: De La Hoya Not Fool Enough To Make Return

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya would be a complete fool to come out of retirement and fight again at 42-years-old ... so says his legendary former promoter, Bob Arum, who's telling Oscar -- DON'T COME BACK.

De La Hoya has been flirting with the idea of getting back in the ring and fighting WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin ... but Arum says it would be a - "terrible, terrible mistake."

Think how many boxers have had the itch to come back. Lots have stayed away when they said they would

I know how tempting it must be though. It's not for money in Oscars case but how good does he think he will be? Do some training first for a good few months .See if it feels right. Do some sparring here and there . Don't just jump into a fight.

Personally I would like to see Oscar back it would bring excitement.

Oscar's fanbase has moved on and those girls are middle aged women now. There is no way that his comeback won't be a financial and artistic failure that DLH will regret the rest of his life.

Many athletes come out of retirement but most do it for financial reasons or because they don't have anything else professionally to transition to. For Oscar neither is the case. He is rich beyond belief, invested his money wisely after boxing and has a career outside of boxing to keep him busy (promoting). This is like Jordan situation. Jordan like Oscar first ballot hall of fame, rich, and transitioned to a job in basketball. So you would think no way would he feel the need to come back. But still he couldn't shake the urge to compete against the best and came back post 40 to play for the lowly wizards. Jordan showed flashes here and there but mostly embarrassed himself do people remember him making the allstar game purely out of name recognition and missing a wide open break away dunk? The man known as air jordan couldn't even dunk a basketball with no one around him and was laughed at. On a nightly basis no named players were lighting him up.

I have no doubt Oscar could fight again and tons of people will pay to see it and it would be a successful event. And if matched at the right weight against the right type of fighter Oscar might look good for flashes and might even win. But more likely he will look bad and if matched against the wrong fighter it will be like Jordan embarrassing himself on a dunk. I don't think he is serious about coming back but if he is hopefully he has people around him to talk him out of it.

After the letdown of May/Pac boxing could benefit from the return of the Golden Boy.

                  ..and massacres!

You are wrong. Oscar could roll out of bed tomorrow fight anybody he wanted and it would pull the best ratings HBO has had all year. Jordan came back and the wizards were hottest ticket around even after it became clear he was struggling on the court and his team wasn't winning. People come to see their legends and many will come just to see the trainwreck.
