golovkin's best bet would probably be if the wbc do strip cotto, because then i reckon alvarez (should he beat cotto) would be more inclined to stay nearer to the jr middle division and wouldn't bother swooping in for lemieux, so golovkin could plausibly pick up the newly vacant wbc against heiland (or w/e) and then unify with lemieux within his next two or three fights. if, however, the wbc decide to sanction the cotto-canelo fight as a middleweight defence (which i believe is likely), then the winner could perhaps further delay their mandatory defence against golovkin with a lemieux unification - and once they have their mitts on the ibf, they may just go ahead and ditch the wbc and its pesky mandatory. there's also haymon to consider: he will surely want a title to share out between his middleweight stable of jacobs, quillin, harrison, charlo and wade. i guess he will either try to get golovkin stripped of the wba or try to bring the wbo back to america with a big bid to whoever ends up on top of the pile between lee, saunders and eubank jr. so, worst case scenario, golovkin one year from now is stuck in the same situation as currently, except possibly with the wbc and possibly without the wba

Hopefully Oscar and Lemieux step up to the plate but I have a feeling they are gonna have a couple showcase fights and hope to make a Canelo fight after. We'll see.

I expect David to have at least a year's worth of showcase fighters before GGG. Maybe at the end of next year. Oscar doesn't have many cash cows. He will take advantage of the ones he has.

WBC cannot sanction the Cotto - Canelo fight without GGG's approval. No point in any further discussion on that matter.

When Cotto is stripped or vacates, Golovkin is automatically promoted to champion due to his holding the interim title. No fight against any other boxer required.

There is not one sanctioning body that will side with Haymon at this point in time. First of all, WBA is part of the lawsuit filed against him so there will be no cooperation there. Second thing is that they know that Haymon has no need of their titles and does not even allow them to be presented during his broadcasts. Third is that PBC are only waiting for the proper time to introduce their own titles into the mix, may well have done so already if not for the lawsuit, and will have no need of any alphabet title for his stable of fighters.

The thing is that the title situation is completely out of the hands of the WBC. Golovkin has total control over that situation. They can say whatever they want, but Golovkin's mandatory status qualifies as a legal contract and it cannot be broken by the WBC alone. GGG MUST agree to step aside and he has let his terms be known and will not change at this point in time.

You have great faith in the WBC, that they will be bound by their own rules. I have less faith.

Secondly I offer you this prize **** up from less than 20 years ago perfectly illustrating how rules get bent:-

In early 1998, Roy Jones, Jr. announced that he was relinquishing his WBC light heavyweight title. In response, the WBC ordered a bout between Graciano Rocchigiani from Germany and the former champion Michael Nunn to fill the vacancy, sanctioning it as a world championship match. On March 21, 1998, Rocchigiani won the fight and a WBC belt; in the subsequent WBC rankings, he was listed as "Light-Heavyweight World Champion."

Jones, however, had a change of heart and asked if the WBC would reinstate him as the champion. In a move that violated nearly a dozen of its own regulations, the WBC granted the reinstatement.[citation needed] Rocchigiani received a letter from the WBC advising that the publication of his name as champion was a typographical error, and he had never been the official titleholder.[citation needed]

Rocchigiani immediately filed a lawsuit against the WBC in a U.S. federal court, claiming that the organization's actions were both contrary to their own rules and injurious to his earning potential (due to diminished professional stature). On May 7, 2003, the judge ruled in Rocchigiani's favor, awarding him $30 million (U.S.) in damages and reinstating him as a former WBC champion (Rocchigiani had lost a bout since his WBC title match).

The following day, the WBC sought protection by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (i.e., corporate debt restructuring) in Puerto Rico. The organization spent the next 13 months trying to negotiate a six-figure settlement with Rocchigiani, but the fighter at first rejected the proposal.

On June 11, 2004, the WBC announced it would enter Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation (i.e., business closing and total asset sell-off) proceedings, effectively ending its existence. This action prompted some in the boxing community to plead with Rocchigiani to settle the dispute, which he did in mid-July 2004. The WBC continues.

The IBF isn't a legitimate title though, thats one step outside the 4 legitimate belts, ibo wbo wba wbc.

They fight should still happen, but Goldenboy is trying to build up its stable, if they can make money having the lemming fight bums in canada, thats what they are going to do.

They already lost half their fighter stable to Haymon, and have nobody that earns outside of Canelo at the moment, so I doubt they feel Lemieux to anyone. They will protect him, and suck on the canadian money as long as they can.
