Good for Ward. $2,030,000 paycheck with 50% of Smith's weight penalties.

No wonder HBO laughed him out of the building.

I don't see Ward being worth his asking price. It's no wonder HBO had enough of him. Coming back after almost 2 years of inactivity in a tune-up fight, and still making 2 mil. If Jay-Z is willing to pay it more power to him, but I don't see it as a wise investment. I can't imagine how much Ward will demand when he actually fights live competition.

It is a necessary investment even if Ward isn't a PPV draw. Assuming Ward has not rusted, he will be the second best boxer in the world; the best once Mayweather retires. Having him builds the prestige of his promotional company.

It's why Showtime would have been prepared to take some losses when signing Mayweather. They needed to improve their reputation of having the best fighter on their network.

I get that. It just feels a bit early to me to be throwing that kind of cash at him. Maybe he lost something in that down time. Still I get that Jay-Z wants to become a big player in the sport, and he's willing to take the gamble.

There was no point in the history of boxing was Ward was ever the 2nd best boxer in the world.

HBO hates American boxers. I wish it were different, but Hershman hates Americans. He's only interested in the Soviet fighters.

Super 6 doe!!!!!! When you look at how infrequently he fights, you have to wonder if he doesn't plan it out like this to prolong his career, thinking he will take less damage over the long haul.
