  • Comments Thread For: Nicholas Walters Drops, Powers Past Miguel Marriaga

The Theater, Madison Square Garden, New York City - Unbeaten featherweights collided, and Nicholas Walters (26-0, 21KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Miguel Marriaga (20-1, 18KOs). Because Walters was overweight on Friday, the title became vacant and it was only on the line for Marriaga. Because Marriaga lost, the belt will remain vacant. The scores were 118-109, 117-110 and 119-108.

Walters avenges a loss that he suffered to Marriaga in the amateurs.

It was a jabbing match in the first round with both fighters being cautious. Walters was comtrolling the action with his jab in the early going, but Marriaga was quickly finding a home for his big right hand. Walters was digging hard to the body, especially with his left hand.

Agreed. He needs to work on defending against that shot. He may not be able to walk through punches like that from 130 lb fighters.

But I was impressed with his body shots, the variety of his punches, and the fact that he followed the gameplan of working the body for the first half of the fight and then unleashing his right hand when Marriaga started to slow down.

This Marriaga guy was tougher than I expected

I hope Walters can kill himself to make 126 one last time for a Lomachenko fight. If not I'd love to see him fight Verdejo at 130, I think he would get knocked out though.

Solid performance by Walters. Good, sustained work to the body. I think Marriaga accounted very well for himself in the fight. Think he clipped Walters pretty good in the 12th. Good fighter.

Wonder if Walters is going to be able to stay at '26 for much, if any, longer.

              145 tonight.... Damn.

The Top Rank Box Nation announce broadcasting team were all over Walters and his jock strap man. Like wow. I saw Marriaga land some nice clean shots and they never acknowledged it. Seems like Walters might just move up instead of fighting Gary Russell and Vasyl Lomachenko.

I don't know what kept Marriaga upright... but yeah, Walters has to get some defense for the big rights or he's history one division up.

Kind of a shame for Marriaga to lose is undefeated record to a guy who failed to make the weight and was basically just too big for him by the time they got in the ring.

Hope he gets some good fights because i think he can more than hold his own against some of the top guys in the division in a fair fight.
