  • Comments Thread For: Kovalev's Promoter: Andre Ward Will Probably Happen

CEO Kathy Duva of Main Events, who promote IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1, 24KOs), feels very good about the possibility of a 2016 showdown taking place with Olympic gold medal winner Andre Ward (27-0, 14KOs).

Ward is returning on June 20th at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. The fight will be his first since a win over Edwin Rodriguez in November of 2013. Now with a new promoter, Roc Nation Sports, Ward will step into the ring against British contender Paul Smith.

I really wanna see this fight...like Duva said, two fighters ranked in the top 5 P4P is a great fight....Krusher should ice Adonis to become UNDISPUTED at LHW and the table will be set for a classic!!...Ward being back in action is great for the sport....the guy hasn't lost since he was kid...all he do is WIN!!...I expect nothing less when he jumps in with Krusher....GREAT fight!!

Duva is either trying to paint a rosy picture of Kovalev's options, or she is being naive.

I'd be very surprised if that fight is announced in 2015 or 2016.

It's odds-on Ward returns to SMW, and if he goes to 175 Kovalev's door won't be the first he knocks on.

Andre Ward will make sure the fight is in California so he can have a shady referee like Jack Reiss who will permit him to try and cut Sergey with deliberate head butts.

But I remember Kovalev was avoiding Hopkins' head butts very well.

This fight would be great but I'm not sure Ward would sign it though.

Much better than the ****** GGG/Ward thing that's never gonna happen.

Yup, home town ref is a necessity. A ref that would blame Kovalev for the Ward clinches. Im not so sure even excessive holding would help him that much in this fight though.

I don't think it would for two reasons.

                1. Kovalev is strong enough to shrug off the clinch, as he showed when Pascal tried it.

                2. He is able to move back quickly out of range and throw a punch at the same time when his opponent comes forward to tie him up which he showed against Hopkins.

However, it's possible Ward is just an expert clincher, and would be stronger at 175 in order to tie him up. I'm skeptical though, I think Kovalev beats him.

excellent match-up. much respect to ward if he takes it within his next two fights - i'm picking kov to win. i guess that with hbo signing kovalev to such a longterm contract they will be willing to pay good money to get quality opposition in there with him
