Not entirely true anymore. Since the time of Robinson-Maxim most states (including NY) have set limits as to the maximum weight difference between the combatants. Without looking it up, I think NY is either 10 lbs or maybe 12 lbs at that weight, I dont remember. So assuming its 12, then if Geale weighed in at 157, then Cotto could be no lighter than 145

Edit: Ok, I looked it up. In NY, in a middleweight bout, there cannot be a difference of more than 13 pounds.

junior flyweight (108 pounds) 4 pounds
    flyweights (112 pounds) 5 pounds
junior bantamweight (115 pounds) 6 pounds
    bantamweights (118 pounds) 7 pounds
junior featherweight (122 pounds) 7 pounds
    featherweights (126 pounds) 8 pounds
junior lightweight (130 pounds) 9 pounds
    lightweights (135 pounds) 10 pounds
junior welterweight (140 pounds) 11 pounds
    welterweights (147 pounds) 12 pounds
junior middleweight (154 pounds) 13 pounds
    middleweights (160 pounds) 13 pounds
super middleweight (168 pounds) 13 pounds
light heavyweights (175 pounds) 14 pounds
    cruiserweight (190 pounds) 15 pounds
heavyweights (all over 190 pounds) no limitations

155lbs vs Martinez, now 153lbs. You guys wanna tell me GGG vs Cotto would be a fair fight? This guy could still make 154 comfortably.

This gives him ammunition to demand a fight with GGG at 155. Which is fair to Cotto, but it's not fair to GGG or right given that the 160 title would be a stake.

It's one thing coming in at 153 to fight at 160 if your opponent is free to fight at 160, but the CW is what makes it absurd. What if he demands that every MW that fights him comes in at a lower weigh, then what's the point of being a MW if you don't want them MW?
        MW is 154.1-160.

If Cotto wants to wear a middleweight title around his waist, then he should be prepared to defend it against full-strength middleweights. Or, he can elect to go back down to 154.

Unfortunately, they have not yet created a 157lb division just for him.

That's a technicality and you know it.

But if you maintain all is fair there, then GGG and Cotto is a fair fight. What's .5 lbs?

oh if that's what your saying then yea!

I thought you were saying something along the lines as some other posters saying that he didnt make the "minimum weight" for a mw fight lol

just like the 3 pt line in the NBA being different distance to the hoop, the heavyweight exception does not make sense.

Sometimes I'll say dumb things about Cotto because I am not a fan (ignore them haha), but gun to my head, I actually he has no business in the ring with GGG. And that's fine. Getting the title from Sergio was huge and should be applauded regardless of anything.

But for the benefit of other fighters and keeping divisions kind of honest, he should try to lord over 154. He is looking better with Roach. I see him dominating 154. He would make as much money and let the 160 division sort itself out. It would also force GGG to move up once the money man is gone as I think Canelo would stay at 154.

He's the key here, which is both good (For him), and bad (lots of haters for valid and non valid reasons, me included)

You're right about that, he will be sucking air after 3-5 rounds depending on pace of the fight.
