Lara has never fought a light middleweight contender above the division limit, nor did he ever fail to make weight. Lara, Trout, Molina, Angulo, Kirkland, they have all made 154 when they fought, even in non-title bouts.Canelo is the only one asking for catch-weights.

This would not look as bad if I was 100% sure Canelo could make 154 without being affected. But since he missed weight against Angulo, he has fought at 155. If a fighter is big for his weight class and wants to rehydrate up to 20 pounds after the weigh-in (cf. Angulo), that's fine, as long as he can come under or right at the division limit. If he can't, or doesn't want to, he has to move up. Canelo wants to fight light middleweights without having to lose that extra pound.
    are you sure??
lara has at least 10 fights over the 154lbs limit, he was still 29 and fighting the likes of hearns and hernandez over the limit, so again that rookie excuse at 29 when he already had paul willimas on his record is laughable...

    • Defending Canelo is just a joke. Anybody defending Canelo's special weight class needs to get off his nuts. Team Canelo and Golden Boy don't want Canelo to have the same fate as Chavez Jr. Just look at how serious people take Chavez Jr. now after getting destroyed by Fonfara. DLH and friends just trying to milk the Mexican boxing public with these bogus accomplishments but but but he's young though lol

Boxing is becoming a joke with these special catch weights. Basically Canelo is going to be a middleweight beating up on welterweights for the next couple of years. Also please don't come with a excuse of "but but but your boy Cotto does it" **** Cotto as well. I'm all for the sport to be fair.

this is something i can respect, if you criticize a fighter i expect you to show just as much rage against the others too... by the way none of the fighters he faced at 155 are WWs so lets keep it real, those are fighters under the exact same circumstances as canelo, so they should be considered MWs too...

I wasn't aware Hernandez and Hearns were considered contenders. That's news to me. Lara could even have 20 fights above 154 lbs. as long as they were not meaningful fights against someone in the top 10. I won't criticize Canelo if he faced the 85th ranked light middleweight next at a catch-weight of 156 lbs.

so non meaningful fights are ok at CWs now?? i guess you have your own rules when it comes to CWs... most people wont consider a non-title fight meaningful unless two big names are fighting each other...
you could then make the case that canelo didnt consider lara, kirk or perro meaningful fights, neither had a title on the line, perro was a comeback fight(both coming of an L), lara is a no name with no fanbase and kirk was a stay busy fight like most of us saw it since the very moment it was signed...

Nelo's best win is Jose Cotto.

                  • Canelo needs to man up and Cotto needs to drop the 160 belt and move down.

Oh, and F*** Golden Boy as a promotion, staff and mother****in' crew. And if you're down with Golden Boy, F*** you too!!

Judging by the posts in this thread, this is not my own rule. Nobody but you cares about catch-weight bouts between two prospects or journeymen and only a minority of people, and this is an euphemism, are giving Canelo a pass for creating his own weight class. Granted, Canelo gets a lot of unwarranted hate, but in this instance, it's hard to defend him.

Canelo-Lara was a meaningless PPV fight between the two best light middleweights in the world LOL. Angulo (PPV) and Kirkland might not have had a lot of momentum coming in but they were at least longtime light middleweight contenders.
