The first Floyd fight I saw live was Cotto, which I really enjoyed, so I liked him at first(I think he took a risk with Cotto in the 12th which I haven't seen him do since then), but the more I learned about him the more I disliked him. I think you have to be a very dedicated fan to simply ignore all the ***** **** Floyd has done over the years, from the Ortiz KO, to his ducking, to the Maidana gloves situation, etc. I think the people who like him sympathize with him because if they were in the same position they would do the same thing(Money over Glory), but I think that's the wrong mindset for a fighter. Just my opinion.
For one how about you try stepping in the ring. All these overly critical fans never stepped foot in a ring and have no idea what it takes. No fighter should risk their health for idiotic fans who could care less for their health and won't pay their bills once their career is over. Going to talk about what the mind set of a fighter should be but never stepped in the ring against world class opposition smh.

Casual fans don't really understand boxing or understand what goes on behind the scenes.

Ortiz headbutt Mayweather several times, the last one was obvious and he apologized 5 times. After the first time, that's it, protect yourself. He's an idiot (Ortiz) and deserved to get koed.

Maidana's gloves had no padding in the knuckle area. He was obviously trying to do something and ended up fighting with the same gloves Mayweather fought with so there was no advantage for Mayweather.

Who has he ducked? He beat the guys that supposedly could beat him. One of them, (Pacquiao) got famous beating Mayweather leftovers at catch weights and beat guys like Brandon Rios and Chris Algieri lol. Ray Robinson didn't fight Charley Burley or anyone from the Murderers row but he's not a ducker. The reality is you can't fight everybody.

Across five weight classes, Mayweather has 26 world title fights and beat 23 current or former world champs, beat 2 guys that are currently in the hall of fame and beat atleast another 5 or 6 guys that will eventually be in the hall of fame.

The standard he is held to compared to everyone else is remarkable.

Lol you basically proved me right, and yes we are paying for boxing fights so why the **** shouldn't we expect good fights. Pretty pathetic that you care for some stranger's health and money over your own bottom line. I don't wish any boxer harm, but this is a combat sport, pain and injury are part of the game, everyone who fights knows that going in or at least should know that. I wish it was earlier so I could reply to the rest of your idiotic rebuttals(I suppose because I have never been a mailman, I can't criticize one that does a bad job huh, gtfo with that ****** logic, and I have sparred) but it's late so I will leave it at that.

Not true. When Mayweather didn't like Maidana's custom gloves, Maidana's team said ok we can use a regular pair of Everlast MX gloves. Floyd said no, you will use the gloves I want. He didn't let Maidana use his regular puncher gloves, and forced him to use a kind of gloves he had never used.

How do you say there was no advantage to mayweather? mayweather would love to have healthy hands so he can use punchers gloves... but he doesn't.

Do you think Maidana is the only one using punchers gloves? even people under TMT promotions use Everlast MX. So obviously Floyd was trying to neutralize some of the Maidana's power. It was not fair.

I don't get emotionally involved with fighters' personalities so it's not about liking or disliking fighters, I just have a huge amount of respect for Mayweather's abilities and achievements.

I also respect the discipline he's shown over the 19 years he's been a pro. 19 years. The training (his workouts are insane), living the life and always finding a way to win. Also, you can hate his attitude towards the sport but when you compare to Meldrick Taylor or David Reid, I can understand where he's coming from. The history of the sport is littered with fighters that "left it all in the ring" while getting busted up or bled dry and left destitute by slimy promoters and Mayweather changed that for himself. A guy with a seemingly poor education and tough upbringing took control to be the most successful athlete on the planet. Meldrick Taylor fought how fans think a fighter should. Who looks out for him now? If it was someone close to you, who would you rather he be? Mayweather or Taylor? I ask a lot of so called "fans" this question and most answer with "Who?".

And, yes Mayweather is a douche that contradicts himself and is damn right childish at times. But he chose to be who he is whether people like it or not, rather than be some fake good guy that someone else made him be. Fighters like De La Hoya, Hatton (I'm British) and even Pacquiao tried to be media darlings but all have dirty laundry and have revealed themselves to be less than the sporting, respectable guys we were made to believe they were, ironically after all losing to Mayweather. I can respect Mayweather refusing to be a promoter's puppet, which he could so easily have continued to do and dish out a quarter of his earnings for the privilege.

The OP made a point of automatically rooting for the underdog. All well and good but to me that is a loser mentality. Wanting "seemingly perfect" to lose to make oneself feel less inadequate. I just respect what it takes to be that good. No one is born a success. Some are lucky but most have to work damn hard. One more thing I respect, is Mayweather's desire to keep winning. People fear failure but successs, and routine success is harder to deal with. With it, peop, expect more, demand greater, develop higher standards and want more and more to see you fail. Bucking those trends must be damn tough.

I don't expect people to agree with me but it's all about respect. Like and dislike is a passing fad, and fickle like a lot of boxing fans.

Extremely well rounded/ fundamentally sound and he can change his approach in the ring or on a fight by fight basis, can't explain it any simpler than that.

Great post man. His personality repulses me but what he's done in the ring is impressive. I would have preferred that he fought the big names on his résumé in their prime but that did not happen, that's not say he wouldn't have beaten them in their prime anyway. Been watching since the 90's and he's one of the best I've seen.
