  • Comments Thread For: Roach on Weight: Cotto Will Fight at Full 160 Some Day

Next Saturday night, Miguel Cotto will make the first defense of his WBC middleweight championship against Daniel Geale at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Some fans are critical of Cotto's ongoing run in the middleweight division, because the Puerto Rican superstar has yet to fight an opponent at the contract weight of 160-pounds, which is the middleweight limit.

Cotto's 2014 title winning effort over Sergio Martinez took place at a catch-weight of 159-pounds. Against Geale, the catch-weight is even steeper with the Australian challenger being forced to sink down to 157-pounds.

No need for him to fight at 160
He will get sparked by nelo and ggg and retire

two completely different types of catchweights roach.

Cotto is bringing Geale down 3 lbs

Canelo is just not fighting at the 154 lbs limit, making it easier to make weight.

With so many weight divisions these days there should be no need for cws.

Don't call yourself the middleweight champ if you aren't going to fight at the ****ing weight!! I don't mind canelo fighting at 155lbs if its not for a title.

"Someday" ? How many days does he figure Cotto has left?

I personally hope Cotto hangs them up in the next couple of years.

I don't see Cotto beating Canelo or Golovkin- but I hope he at least fights Canelo.

Golovkin is Canelo's big fight on the horizon moreso than he is Cotto's in my opinion.

Cotto can still make good fights with Canelo, Maidana, Khan.. maybe even a Pacquiao or Mayweather rematch if it plays out right?

I don't think he has to wade too far into Middleweight if he loses or vacates the title. If he aims to keep the belt and fight real middleweights then I hope he has a retirement plan/exit strategy because I don't know how many of those fights he should realistically take.
