Sub-mediocre card but kinda crazy that Keith Thurman is fighting on ESPN. He would've been thought to be too good for that sort of stage in the old boxing model. I like the model for building stars but Collazo can be awkward. Will be interesting to see if Thurman can pull off an impressive KO.

I like this fight for Thurman's resume, Collazo is almost always a tough opponent who can give high level guys a challenge, but the underlying message is no Mayweather vs Thurman fight on September 12 which I'm less happy about as I felt like that woulda been the best final fight for Mayweather.

He only delivered Guerrero/Thurman to kick off big ratings for his NBC contract. That's not like him to pit two high profile fighters against one another. Remember, he and SHO's Espinoza brought us the "Deepest PPV Card in Boxing" with Garcia vs Salka & Peterson vs Santana!!! Then made us wait more than a year for Garcia vs Peterson, and Al obviously felt Garcia could cash bigger checks, so he insured any close decision went in the favor of Garcia....a fight Peterson clearly won; just look at Garcia's face. Haymon is horrible for Boxing. Which is why Dela Hoya is suing him for a few hundred million dollars.

Why are people acting as though Haymon fighters have any control at all over who they fight? Have you seen a Haymon contract? No minimum purses, no minimum number of fights, just the words "best efforts".
What that means is Al says "this is the fight", and thats the end of it. Take it or sit.
and p.s. any talk of Thurman refusing Porter is just silly. I know Keith and I know Dan Birmingham and I know for a fact they have been asking for Porter for almost 2 years.....Last edited by OnePunch; 05-22-2015, 10:38 AM.

Mayweather vs Brook, imo, maximizes the type of money that is brought in from the UK, while also creating a far more marketable fight for the US PPV audience (unification bout for all of the world championship at 147, 'old lion vs young lion', the years long push in Britain to see how 'special' Kell really was, and loading the card with a US vs UK angle, to build on the Mexican Independence Day spectacle of Mares-Santa Cruz).
If Khan gets the fight, especially after a so-so performance against Algieri, folks will latch onto the knockout defeats, that Khan brings, outside of UK attention, nothing extra to the table, and the only marketing story that can really be pushed is the retirement arc.
The retirement bout, on its' own, is likely to sell well regardless; if that last fight is a meaningful fight, with something actually at stake, it becomes a bigger fight than just a retirement bout.

wouldn't be shocked to see the fighters on that card do the FirstTake/HQ w Dan Le Batard/H&H/etc circuit of support programming in the weeks to the fight.
Collazo's awkwardness, imo, will make for a better fight than folks here are expecting; still think Thurman wins, pretty comfortably.
