Comments Thread For: HBO's Nelson on The New Pact With Sergey Kovalev

On Saturday afternoon at a press conference held inside a conference room at the LAX Westin Hotel, it was officially announced that light heavyweight kingpin, Sergey Kovalev, had entered into a new multi-fight agreement with HBO. It's clear that 'the Krusher' is one of the pillars of HBO's boxing franchise.

"He's grown so tremendously in both fan-base, viewership and I think we even see a maturation in skills between the (Bernard) Hopkins fight and the (Jean) Pascal fight, fighting those fighters at the elite level and delivering dominating performances. It's absolutely what the fans want to see," said HBO Sports V.P. of Programming, Peter Nelson, who was instrumental in bringing Kovalev to the network in the summer of 2013.

"Mohammedi is a real test." HBO, please - Mohammedi has two 1st and 2nd round KO LOSSES on his record. What will Kovalev do to him? Same as Golovkin vs Monroe Jr. HBO is airing Cowboys vs Indians masked as competitive bouts. These fights arn't competitive! Who are you fooling!?

HBO has every right to market their fighters, but to continuously give them easy KO wins against guys that have no real chance to win even though they have a sanctioning body ranking (we all know how those are earned in many instances) is not that compelling to watch.

Considering that you defend Haymon at every turn i'm really puzzled by this criticism of HBO and Kovalev. Mohammedi isn't a particularly interesting opponent for Kovalev, he'll probably get knocked out within 6 rounds, possibly 2 or 3 but he is mandatory so there is nothing really to do about it but fight him. The main reason Kovalev gets 'easy' knockouts is because he is exceptionally good, and powerful. Kovalev is about the most compelling fighter in the sport to watch.

I didn't say or imply that. Comment was only about the direction HBO is taking Kov right now.

Regurgitating something a poster wrote regarding Haymon because they didn't like being disagreed with doesn't make it true.

He didn't KO Bhop or Pascal easy, he did Camparello and will Mohammedi precisely because they have no chance to win.

This is neither a compelling fight nor one we should be seeing next.

The direction HBO is going, excitement over skills, rewarding losing good over winning, doesn't help the sport or the fighters.
